I’ve added the tv show “The Boys” 2019 version to plex
It auto matches to 1993 version. I tried to correct it but the 2019 version refuses to show up in the search results. I even searched on the “thetvdb” series number. That did not help.
I have no clue how to resolve it.
Try The Boys (2019)
BUT do a Plex Dance while you do.
-
move all files for the media item out of the directory your Library is looking at so Plex does not “see” it anymore
-
update library ( scan for media items )
Wait til process completes -
empty trash
-
clean bundles
-
Rename them at this step
double check naming schema and move files back -
update library
I did another search on the show number and it popped up with the name “Delete” I selected that, and it ended up being the correct show. I checked the TheTVDB entry, it does not show it as marked for deletion. Show seems fine. Think its a problem on there end.
I had the same issue and the only way to populate the Cast was to Fix Match/Search options/The movie database. This sequence has worked for me many times on other titles.
I try my very best not to use the fix match option because in the event I have to rebuild my server, I don’t want to have to “fix match” on a few dozen(or more) movies/shows.
Though I must admit I just used fix match a couple of days ago. I tried every combination I could think of. The movie
would not match!!
I was most displeased by it but knew I wasn’t going to be able to do an automatic match.
strangely and/or luckily for me, the boys populated in plex perfectly without any help from me.
I am using the movie db agent. (not tvdb)
Yes, that seems to be difference. A different agent.
I just added it to my library about an hour ago (using the tvdb agent) and it seems to have matched correctly.
I added (2019) to the folder and files.
Same here. Just funny the log shows ‘deleted’ but ultimately matched automatically without issue.
The Boys (2019)
Season 01
The Boys (2019) - S01E01 - The Name of the Game.mkv
The Boys (2019) - S01E02 - Cherry.mkv
etc
worked fin with thetvdb agent
“The Boys (2019)” matched to “The Boys (1993)”. A Fix Match with the Year removed in the search finally found it at TVDB, but there were no actor images. Fix Match again with TMDB as the agent found everything.
Plex now has screwed up matching at TVDB so bad almost ALL new shows are a bust right out of the gate.
… and here’s the reason coming home to roost:
It was a bad idea then - and it’s still a bad idea, but now it’s getting worse… as bad ideas usually do.
If you want The Boys (2019) to match at TVDB the first time you’ll probably have to give it the wrong name of “The Boys”. Plex auto-defaults to the most recent version and that basically means Plex doesn’t know whether to scratch it’s @$$ or wind it’s watch at TVDB any more.
Early on when TVDB matches starting failing (because a correct name, no longer works) TVDB developers said: If Plex wants to match against TVDB properly, they’re going to have to follow the rules of the API.
Plex refuses to back down from a bad idea gone ballistic… so here we are.
Plex did all this chasing EPG data. How’s that Plex DVR working? Is everybody happy?
Correct , Cast was populated after using TMDB. The main difference was the summary with IMDb. Glad there is consensus on the different agents.
Yep. In the beginning there was (and still is) only ONE reliable TV Show Database and that’s TVDB. Plex decided “Outsmarting” TVDB was a good idea, but this far down the road I think everyone can agree they walked into that confrontation unarmed.
I haven’t yet changed the default agent for TV Shows to TMDB, but I do believe that’s eventually going to be the only thing left to do.
I’m not entirely sure where this conversation is headed but:
- Using the default Agent settings
- Created dummy files for this series.
- There was no matching problem or other ambiguity.
I therefore need to ask:
a) Embedded metadata in an MP4?
b) Ambiguous / insufficiently qualifying names?

Here is what I get. Is there a problem with the metadata ?
To be fair, up until a couple of hours ago, thetvdb had practically no actors listed. I think at the time I first looked at the series there was 2 actors populated on the site.
P.S. Funny, I got the same cropped picture of Antony Starr!
For my part - Filebot went to TVDB and got the name they used and LMA has been rendered sterile, by demotion, from it’s previous task of making the use of MP4/M4V files impossible (in it’s high ranking default position).
I’ve been using MKV files for a long while, but old habits are hard to kick so I clean ALL metadata from those as well… just cause…:
I tried to add The Boys (2019) yesterday sometime, came up snake-eyes on the initial match with The Boys (1993). I don’t know what constitutes a successful pairing of Plex and TVDB from within Plex HQ, but the exact freakin’ name shouldn’t fail to match. EVER!
Initially the fail at TVDB could, at least in part, be due to my requesting it before the proxy had it, but this TVDB thing is really getting out of hand - considering TMDB got it exactly right the first time.
(images… what a concept)
You’re getting close Juice. From a little tiny missing picture to a big missing picture.
It seems to like the local upload, probably due to the internet version being an unsecured address (wild guess)… noted.
It ain’t that funny, but here’s a Fischer Price suggestion that should have been blatantly obvious long ago…
Pick the one that doesn’t belong…
