Metadata is Wrong Even though Matched with the Correct Show

Server Version#: 1.25.7.5604
Player Version#: Latest

The issue is that even though I named my folder and files correctly and matched it to the right TVDB ID, it’s still showing the metadata for the wrong show. Granted, this particular show has many remakes over the years and shares the same title, but no matter how hard I try, it keeps showing the wrong year, casting, etc. The data I’m trying to match it to is TVBD 165971, but it keeps matching it to TVBD 116181.

At first I thought perhaps it’s TVBD that’s the issue, but when I checked, they have the correct information, so It has to be coming from Plex. I even followed all the steps here: Fix Match / Match | Plex Support and it still didn’t work.

I also noted that when matching, it shows the right poster, but but the date is wrong. it did show the right metada for the other version though.

Plex DocumentationYour MediaNaming & Organizing Your Movie Files

How are you naming the file?

Seance 2021 is a movie. Plex uses IMDB.com and TheMovieDB.org IDs to match movies (it uses TVDB and TheMovieDB IDs for TV shows)…

Try naming the movie using the IMDB ID in the folder and file name:
/Movies/Seance (2021) {imdb-tt11188624}/Seance (2021) {imdb-tt11188624}.ext

Plex Dance the movie after renaming. It will clear incorrect information from the Plex server database.

It is a tv drama, I’m following the TVBD database, which was it was one the instruction:

  • For a TV Shows library, you can similarly enter the TVDB ID as the title to search for that particular show. If you visit the Archer (2009) page on the TVDB website, you can see that it has a Series ID of “110381”. So, entering tvdb-110381 as the search term will search for that exact show. For The Movie Database the format would be tmdb-10283

I did try what you said, but it didn’t work.

However, I went into the Library’s Advanced Setting and switched the Agent to TVBD and it worked. Before I had it on “Plex TV Series”. It’s now fixed. Thanks!!!

EDIT: Nevermind, didnt’ fiix it. Turns out Plex TV Series Agent is faster and a better version so I’m now back to square one. It seems it’s pulling the data from the correct one, it just the year and casting that is off.

It is a movie. It should be named like a movie and put in a movie library, even if it aired on TV.

Did you put it in a movie library, not a TV show library?

Also, perform the Plex Dance when moving it.

It matches on my system.

The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2008 is a 50 episodes series, thus it does into my TV show library. The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2003 is also a TV show (both being adapted from the same novel).

Thus, I put the drama into the TV show folder. I don’t think it’s the folder naming that is the problem. It’s the Plex Agent that’s pulling info wrongly.

As you can see, it found both adaptations of the show. However, note that the first show found is listed as 2003 instead of 2008 (which is when this adaptation aired). Other than that, the poster matches the drama I’m trying to correct. Usually, I would be fine with the incorrect year. However, it’s also pulling metadata from the 2003 version that includes a wrong cast list.

A list that should include these two main leads:

Screen Shot 03-19-22 at 01.38 PM

is using the ones from the 2003 TV series instead:

I’m planning on putting both versions of the drama adaptations on my server and want to make sure each has its correct information.

I’m also suspecting that it’s the “Plex TV Agent” that’s causing the issue, as when I temporarily switched over to the TVBD agent, the problem is gone. I’m using the Plex TV Agent as I found it smoother and faster than the previous version.

On another note, I have performed the Plex dance many times and the result was always the same. I also tried naming the folder with it’s database ID like you did and it still gave me the same result. It’s why I conclude that it’s the Plex TV Agent that’s the problem.

I just noticed there are duplicate IDs at TheTVDB.com.

Seance (2021), a movie, has ID 165971.

Legend of the Condor Heroes (2008), a series, also has ID 165971.

I though you were trying to match the movie, not the TV series.

So, ignore everything I mentioned above, and apologies for the confusion.

I’ll drop the folks at thetvdb.com a note about the duplicate IDs.

Plex may need to get involved as well, since their system will have the duplicate entries too.

I’ll experiment with the naming, etc later today, now that I understand what you’re trying to match.

No problem. I understand the confusion. And thank you so much for helping.

I have the exact same problem with The Endgame (TVDb ID 410357). Every time a new episode is added, Plex ignores the existing match and re-matches the show as Endgame (TVDb ID 228031).
All my folders and files are named correctly (The Endgame\Season 1\The.Endgame.S01E01…). If I do Plex dance, after re-adding the show keeps being matched to the wrong one. I can unmatch it and fix the match manually, but after each new episode is added Plex rolls it back to the wrong metadata, which is absolutely ridiculous. I’m out of ideas…

If you want to avoid a wrong match, this naming is not correct as it doesn’t even have a release year.
So make it at least

\The Endgame (2022)
   \Season 01
      The Endgame - S01E01…

or even better

\The Endgame (2022) - {tvdb-410357}
   \Season 01
      The Endgame - S01E01…

Well, top-level folders are created automatically based on the actual name of the show, and it doesn’t have a year in the name. I’ll try to add it manually, but this feels stupid.
What really beats me, why does it re-matching the whole show each time? What’s the point of being able to “fix the match”, if the manual match is ignored and wrong data is being imported regardless. Is there any way to prevent that? I’d prefer to fix the match of the problematic show one time instead of manually renaming the folders on my seedbox every time Plex gets confused for no reason.

If the show name is ambiguous, add the release year. With Plex, it is recommended to always add the release year. So you don’t have to research whether a title is actually ambiguous or not. After all, this can change at any time, as soon as someone decides to produce a remake or simply picks a title which has already been used.
Teach your downloader software to add the release year to the folder name. Many (or even most) can be adapted to use a fitting naming schema.
