Problem with SRT

Hello,

I’m new to Plex, but I love the software and is really easy to work with. I’ve only 2 problems.

There are a few movies that don’t recognise the srt file (I us "movie.nl.srt). I’ve fixed a few of them and delete the language (to "movie.srt). Than I see the .srt file as unknown and when I change the subtitle back. It will recognise the dutch subtitle. Is there a way to fix this problem. I’ve tried every solution of this forum and reddit, but it won’t work. The only way is to (soft) burn in the title.

When I use Airplay to send the movie to my tv (no smart tv). The subtitle is also not showing.

Make sure Local Media Assets (Movies) is enabled in all sections of Settings → Agents → Movies.

Make sure the SRT file has UTF-8 encoded text. You can check/change this with many text editors such as Notepad++ and with tools such as Subtitle Edit.

The subtitle file must be named exactly the same as the movie, including any extra info in the file name such as resolution, codec info, etc.

Example:

/Movies
  /Avatar (2009)
    /Avatar (2009) [1080p].mkv
    /Avatar (2009) [1080p].nl.srt
    /Avatar (2009) [1080p].nl.forced.srt

After making any changes to the file content or name, re-scan the library and refresh the metadata for the movie.

For additional details, see the Using Subtitles section of Your Media documentation.

I’ve enabled the “local media assets” in agents.
I’m sure it’s a UTF-8 encoded text.

I’ve made the changes so it’s exactly the same as your folder. But it won’t work. It is only not working for 5 movies. Deadpool 1 & 2 and Iron man 1 - 2 - 3. It’s strange that it are the same movies.

I’ve now used handbrake to add the .srt file inside the .mp4. That works, but cost time. But it solved the problem.

Does anyone use plex and airplay and know how to enable the subtitles?

After adding new subtitle files, Refresh Metadata of the movie.
Make sure the srt file uses the UTF-8 text encoding.

Agree. Not sure what is happening there. Plex should pick up the subtitles.

Do not use Handbrake for that purpose. Handbrake transcodes the video, which is why it is taking so long. It can copy/passthru audio tracks, but has no such option for video.

Here’s a short list of free tools to mux audio/video/subtitle tracks in/out of MP4 & MKV containers:

MKVToolNix: Can take MP4 as input. Output is MKV only. Use Multiplexer tab.

Subler: Mac only. MKV/MP4 input. MP4 output. Very good muxing tool. Can also download metadata (cover art, actors, etc) from online sources.

XMediaRecode: Can remux (copy) and re-encode. Works will multiple containers, including MP4 & MKV.

Thank You @FordGuy61. This is the tool I was looking for. So I can edit the few movies that won’t work.

@OttoKerner That is the way I do. The strange part is that it don’t work with 5 movies.

Other movies that can’t find the .srt file, I’ve to remove the language part and than add it again. First it see an unknown subtitle, but it works!

Could you post the content of the guid="... property from the Plex XML info of an affected movie please?

Yes of course.
How can I post this XML info into the forum?

This picture is again to show my folder structure.

You copy and paste it. If you’re using Safari, you’ll have to “View Source”, if all it shows is a blank page.

Thanks.

Here is the XML:
guid=“com.plexapp.agents.imdb://tt1228705?lang=da”

guid="com.plexapp.agents.imdb://tt1228705?lang=da"
would have been sufficient.

Is “Plex Movie” your default agent for your movie library?

Oh sorry, I couldn’t find that word.

How do you mean default agent. In agents I moved “local media assets” tot the top on every page.

The default agent is set in the properties of your movie library, on the ‘Advanced’ tab.

Your movie is matched with the Plex Movie agent, and the match is using the Danish language. Would you rather have Dutch descriptions?

Thanks for your help @OttoKerner

The Danish language was my mistake. I’ve changed it to Dutch.

I’ve now add the subtitles inside the movie. And it works for me. It’s only with 5 movie titles. For some other movies I’ve to delete the .nl and than add it again. That will work for most of them.

Do you also know a solution for my airplay problem?

Sorry, no fruity hardware here.
