Sometimes a SRT subtitle will not be available even though it is in the correct folder

Some movies do not have any subtitles and I want to add this.

I download a SRT file, rename it appropriately and copy it into the correct movie folder. Usually this makes the subtitle appear in the movie settings, but occasionally it does not. It still says None.

If I click “None” only “Search” and “Upload” appear. Uploading the file seem to corrupt certain Norwegian letters. This does not happen when I am able to place the file in the movie folder.

Any ideas why the SRT file is not available for some movies?

Try “Refresh Metadata” for the movie. That usually corrects things like that for me.

Unfortunately, it does not fix it for me… I was thinking there might be errors in the SRT file that makes Plex not recognize it, but the problem persists even though I try a different SRT file.

The problem appears to be movie specific…

This is how it looks right now:

In that folder, does System Internal User PlexMediaServer (dsm 7), have read permission to the SRT?

One other thing to check after checking the permissions. If you copied the srt in after the movie was scanned/matched you may need to scan the library again for plex to pick it up.

May also be a stupid browser refresh problem. Check with an empty browser cache if all the above still does not work.

Indeed. The folder three is like this:

/Media/Movies/U-571 (2000)

The System Internal User PlexMediaServer is given read and write permission to the shared folder Media (and then all subfolders below that I would assume?)

It makes sense I guess since the movie itself does show up in Plex. I assume that would not be possible if the correct read permission was not given?

This problem affects only a handful of the movies I have. Most movies works perfectly. Take this next movie for example. It also includes a SRT subtitle file and here it shows up as expected.

This file is in the following folder three:

/Media/Movies/The Perfect Storm (2000)

My settings are so that libraries are scanned once a change is detected. Normally this works great if I just wait a few seconds. But just to make sure I tried to scan the library again. Unfortunately, without success.

I do not think this is a browser problem. I use the Windows 10 app (not a browser) and I’ve also checked with the iOS app. The subtitle does not appear there either…

Crazy idea as a test… Have you tried a three code language identifier, nor?

A really dumb, dumb question … does it work with a different language code?

If you rename it .en.srt

(I’m having flashbacks to one time where crufty old enterprise system interpreted no as FALSE and it took us forever to figure it out …)

That is a good suggestion! I tried and unfortunately the result was the same…

Good suggestion indeed, but unfortunately it did not solve the issue…

I’m all out of dumb ideas … which returns to ChuckPa’s note about permissions.

If you are manually adding these subtitle files, the Plex user may not have permission to read them. Look at the permissions on the individual movie file vs. the .srt file?

I appreciate you suggestions anyway

The permissions should be in order:

Another somewhat off the wall suggestion but the randomness of this is starting to make me think about the inotify table …

Also, maybe a copy of your full server logs would be helpful if your willing to post them.

I remember this happening to me. Couldn’t figure it out. So I did what I do every time such an inexplicable situation arises, moved the files completely out of the Plex media directory structure, ran “clean bundles” and “optimize database”, then moved it back and rescanned. This usually fixes issues like unrecognized srt files or the metadata pictures changing to incorrect images, etc.

I guess it would be better to figure out what’s really happening but who knows how long that could take. Guess I’m lazy and willing to accept a good workaround.

Interesting, so basically a plex dance fixed it. @Hoggorm would be worth a try as a test.

Maybe its a some oddity related to the srt files being added after the movie itself was added to plex.

Exactly, Plex dance to the rescue.

Worked for me anyway.

What would you know! The Plex dance worked!
