Problem with Tagging

I’ve a large colection of movies and my problem is the internal tags of the files. Sometimes the tag from the origianl field contains wrogn information about the movie and I’m not sure how can i fix these information.
I’m trying to found a generical software to edit this internal metadata information, but this is hard dificult, I’ve found some software to do it, but every software is for mp4, or avi or mkv, not for all of them. Some of them has a lot of years discontinued and some of them not work properly…
I don’t know if there is a generical software to analyse all of them and export this information to a file, I can get this information from plex database if there isn’t a software, but I need to a software to update all of this information
Do someone know any software for this?

Thanks in advantage

You won’t find a single software to deal with all different media containers. At least none that’s free

Question is… what are you trying to achieve?
Do you want the embedded metadata to be used by Plex? (only works for mp4/m4v)

The best long term solution is here:

The most appropriate ‘metadata’ to have in video files is NONE - unless there is a special use case - and hardly anyone requires one. Plex has decided that the ‘best’ place for Local Media Assets is at the Tip-Top of the list - making the use of MP4/M4V files impossible for most folks - but Plex still somehow (for at least 10 years now) is convinced they’re right and a million Users are wrong.

Do the LMA Hack - then you can remove embedded metadata, or not - and it won’t matter either way.

For me, using mkv exclusively works as Plex ignores mkv metadata. All my hardware supports mkv, so my prerequisites are using MKVToolNix on any other video ( AVI, MP4, MKV , MPEG, TS, DIVX and several more) to Multiplex to mkv container. This software is cross platform, free and is very quick as it doesn’t re-encode them.

As juice above has mentioned Naming and LMA low priority in Metadata agents is paramount when using mp4/m4v. It seems it’s time to draw a line in the sand which way in the future, mp4 camp or mkv. There is no wrong way, just the right way to do it going forward.

If you’re on Windows, mp3tag works with most file formats.

Also, make these adjustments and you’ll have to worry about embedded meta tags only in very rare circumstances, from then on:

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Thanks all for share your knowledge.

Actually I’ve a collection of around 10000 movies, 1000 series and thousands of documental or serials of documental…

Most of them are in avi, of course, but most of them are mp4 and mkv also. And obviously this type of collections need maintenance. First dvd, manage dvd collection, pass this information to hard disks, reorganize again, catalog and keep the information update. Now I’m working on the migration to google drive and other unlimited space solutions to try to avoid to lose my collection.

Usually I use plex to some parts of the collection, but now, if I connect all collection to plex, I see a lot of movies with wrong name “DVD TITLE” “Riped by” “Downloaded from” and similar names

Names of the files for my collections are difficult, and I’ve changed the way to do it a lot of times, now the name is “title, year, director” for movies, based in online databases, but when plex read this information, some strange names comes up.

Now, I check name in plex database and use some software to update tags information, mp3tag for mp4 extension, abcavi tag for avi files and mkv tag editor for mkv container. Maybe I can found a way to configure plex to ignore these tags and get the name, but in the future I’m pretty sure that I’ll migrate again the database to another system and maybe this can be the time to update these information.

I’m using mp3tag for some years for audio and the software works very well, but when I use this software for movies the tags are the same for audio, I don’t know if there is a way to add the director, for example. AbcAvi tag editor is a very old software and doesn’t work very well in windows 10, mkv tag editor works very well, I can also use public database to update the information.

Maybe one solution can be reencode all movies to mkv with the option provided by @OttoKerner , but this needs more time than I have…

From now, I follow this procedure, update names of the movies in a folder, read with plex all directory, extract from plex database the names and lookup the strange names, update the files and rescan.

I was thinking that maybe other software are used in the world to do this, because all players read this information from files, but the software to update this information is discontinued

Many thanks to all

Khepper

Make the configuration change mentioned in my previous post, then Refresh Metadata on the affected movies.
In Plex, this is only ever an issue with mp4/m4v files. Plex doesn’t read title and other tags from any other video container formats.
