I have been using using Plex on my AppleTV 4 for maybe 6-8 months now and haven’t used my Roku 3 at all in this time. Tonight I decided to use my Roku because I needed to use the remote headphones as my wife was sleeping on the couch and I discovered that the Plex client which used to work flawlessly is not having problems where one of the following will happen:
- If I pause for a long time, if I restart playback after it runs the buffer it fails saying the source is missing. Restarting Plex client then will show my Plex server as “offline”. It appears that rebooting my Roku 3 fixes this.
- Occasionally (1) will happen but just out of the blue during playback
- Tryng to use the “replay” button also can frequently lead to behavior per (1) as well.
When in this state, the Plex server shows as “unavailable” refreshing doesn’t help. Sometimes I can get it to work by restarting the Plex client, but usually it requires at least restarting my Roku. One time I had to restart PMS on my QNAP.
Looking at the “Plex Media Server” log there is not much to tell me even in DEBUG. If I tail it when trying this all that I see that might be associated is 3 repeats of the line:
Dec 20, 2018 07:48:33.459 [0x7fcd34bff700] DEBUG - CERT: incomplete TLS handshake: short read
Other log entries don’t seem to be associated with this client as the IP addresses are for different devices. Maybe the access token is expiring or something? I was looking at this other thread that could be similar but since my problem seems more intermittent rather than constant like this one, maybe it is not the same. I have not tried to use no encryption to see if it helps.
I am using the latest Roku client as of 12/19/18 when it last phoned home for an update. Plex Media Server on QNAP is V1.14.0.470. I guess next steps is to see if turning of encryption makes this stop, but I really don’t want to operate like this since I do stream over public connections as well as private.
Thoughts?
