Problems w. Plex Playing Certain Matched Files / Possible metadata bug?

I am currently running plex via plexinc/pms-docker on my Unraid server. I am running the latest stable release and have fully updated my player apps. I, at various times, use one of several players. Usually it’s via my nvidia shield or my pixel phone. However, i also use plex on my ipad and my laptop pc.

So a few days ago, I started running into a problem whereby a handful of movies across two separate libraries were exhibiting strange behavior. Whenever I tried to play them via one of the apps - nothing would happen. I would get no “feedback” that the button was even pressed. So to further explore the error - i checked out these files via my web interface and got a popup message that said: “An error occurred loading items to play.” I performed a number of basic troubleshooting tasks but to no avail - this included relaunching the docker, deleting the files and getting different copies, and even adjusting the location of the transcoder directory (switching from cache to ram). None of these resolved the issue.

With some help from the folks over on the discord channel, we narrowed it down to some issues related to the metadata. So i went in and refreshed all of my metadata across all of my libraries; i went and checked a few files out - problem seemed resolved.

Today i went to play one of the originally problematic files that is in a different library and the same error occurred. I have attached a screenshot of the logs around this time. What’s particularly strange is this: if I unmatch the film - it plays fine. If i unmatch it - play it for a few minutes - exit - rematch it - resume, then it also plays fine. However, if i try to start over from the beginning - the same error takes place. The kind folks over on discord suggested that I post here. Please let me know if there is a way to solve this problem. Cheers

I’m not sure what it could be offhand i would enable debug logging in server settings (not “verbose”) and then reproduce and look at logs.

Plex Media Server.log (417.1 KB)

attached is the log - i turned on debug, went and played a few different files to get some data and then downlaoded/extracted/uploaded.

I see the errors but I did not see anything obvious to me in logs so will need to make a report for devs to look at.

may need logs from the one of the players as well.

i’ll gladly provide whatever you need from me - though i may need a little guidance in how to obtain said information out of my system. Thanks for your help and just let me know what you’d like me to do.

just curious if there was anything i could do to help you in the research process. still having this issue.

They couuld not repro and will need one of the player logs as well as the server logs. If it happens on your iPad as well then your iOS logs are probably easiest to get. ( link in how to in orange text)

Sure thing - here ya go:

Here’s the debug log file from my windows app: https://pastebin.com/aYM1SGc5
Here’s the log file from my iPad: https://pastebin.com/AGPnvchn

Pastebin says those are not available anymore. You can click on my username/avatar to message them to me directly.

If you can get the server logs that cover the same timeframe as your player logs it would be appreciated.

Devs asked if you can provide a sample file of one of the ones that did this. If you can put it on Google Drive or something similar and message me a link.

should have it in your messages - if not let me know and i’ll resend it to you. this was not the only version of this film that i tried before reaching out. I can try and get previous versions as well if need be.
