In the last month or so I’ve been having trouble with covers not showing in my Plex library even though they are there.
Here’s one example where it doesn’t show up in the main view or in the Edit -> Poster view:
Here’s another example where it does show up in the Edit -> Poster view, but saving it doesn’t make it show up in the main view:
I’ve been wondering if my library simply has become to big. Any ideas what why this is?
I can find a poster on the internet and use the URL function in Edit -> Poster. That works, but it’s tiresome since this problem is affecting a lot of movies.
PS! Most of my library looks fine, but I would say maybe 1-2% of it is currently without posters.
Well… There could be a few things causing it.
First, let’s look at 8-Ball. The fact it shows no posters at all tells me that most likely Plex has not matched the movie. If the movie is unknown to Plex then all you get for poster options are random screen shots.
You can easily tell if a movie has matched or not from the drop-down menu for the item.
Plex has matched this movie already and you get the ‘Fix Match’ command
Plex has not matched this movie and you get the ‘Match’ command
To better help, please provide the filename, including the file extension.
Plex may not have downloaded all the metadata for The 9th Life of Louis Drax or the download got corrupt on the way down.
Another reason, although unlikely(and weird) might be Plex downloaded/chose the first poster which has an incorrect aspect ratio causing the issue… Yes, I know how it sounds BUT this has happen to me. Initially, Plex downloaded a poster from themoviedb which had an incorrect aspect ratio then a few weeks later as my libraries updated the movie poster disappeared. I spent alot of time trying to understand why this was happening and while I was comparing the posters Plex downloaded vs what themoviedb had I discovered the “blank” areas in Plex were link to posters on themoviedb which had a bad aspect ratio.
Also, what are the other movies you are having problems with? What are the filenames and extensions.
And remember, ‘Fix Match’ should rarely be needed and used, especially ‘Match’. If you have to match a movie manually then the filename is mostly likely wrong causing Plex not to recognize the movie.
Thanks. The weird part is that 8-Ball had a cover one day, gone the next day. As for 9th Life Of Louis Drax and well any movie with a lot of posters. Usually the 7 or 8 first posters gives me a blank, while maybe the 9th works. As for type of files, I have mp4 and mkv which all had covers one day, then none the next. I think there must be a database issue.
Here’s an example of how it can look. I’m not sure when this started, but my library was perfect, zero without covers. Then something happened month or two ago where it just doesn’t want to show the same covers that worked perfectly the day before and struggling to pick new ones.
Also, it doesn’t matter what Agent I choose to get metadata from. Been trying to “Fix Match” between Plex Movie and The Movie Database and both gives covers that doesn’t want to show in the main view.

Another thing I noticed is that the pictures of actors, well known actors are blank as well while unknown ones appear
I wouldn’t worry to much on the actors faces showing up. It’s all about someone uploading a pic to the support sites(thetvdb, themoviedb, etc…). So, it won’t really matter if they are “well known” if these sites don’t have their mug .
Back to the posters. MP4 files can have embedded information that can lead to mis-match movies/shows. Be sure you have no embedded garbage in your mp4 files. If this is not the case then you may be able to fix the issue by disabling IPv6 or by updating the certificates.
Disabling IPv6
SETTING → SERVER → NETWORK → Uncheck Enable server support for IPv6.
I had the IPV6 disabled, but I’m going to give the certificates thing a try.
My movie names are usually like this:
Acts.of.Vengeance.2017.BDRip.x264-ROVERS.mkv
The.Death.of.Louis.XIV.2016.iNTERNAL.BDRip.x264-LiBRARiANS.mkv
Thanks for all the help @NewPlaza . Turns out the certificate trick fixed it. I downloaded the certificated from plex, tmdb and tvdb and installed them (I installed them both for current user and machine). Then I restarted Plex and updated all my libraries and it worked. All posters are back where they are supposed to be
