I’m repeatedly having an issue with Plex on my Shield and I can’t find a fix for it. When I open Plex, it immediately closes, takes me back to my Shield home screen, and then automatically opens again. Even if I go into my Shield’s settings, force stop it, and then re-open, the same thing happens. Then if I’m watching something I’ve recorded, it starts getting consecutively jerky and then freezing for a few seconds, and the app will even occasionally crash and re-opens itself again. It’s almost like it’s run out of memory. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed the app twice now, but the same thing continues to happen. Has anyone experienced this, and, if so, did you find a fix?
Have you rebooted the shield? Do this by either unplugging the power for a few seconds, or holding the menu button until you get the Shield’s quick menu to reboot. Simply turning it off with power will not help, as that sleeps the device but doesn’t reboot entirely. I have to reboot my Shield once a month or so, as things in Plex start breaking and killing off the process doesn’t help.
If this doesn’t help (or you already tried it) then I dunno. Sounds very odd. Try deleting all Plex cache files on the shield (in case they don’t get deleted automatically when you uninstall the app). You may have to sign back into your account afterwards and re-pin your sidebar items.
Side Note: Is the server also on the shield, or elsewhere? This sounds like a Shield client issue, but if the server is also local, that might be something to look into.
Thanks for your reply. I have unplugged the unit several times when Plex has begun freezing, as sometimes it will just stop responding altogether. In any case I tried that this morning and waited about 15 minutes before plugging it in again, but it still did the same thing. Last night I deleted the Plex cache files thinking that might help. It took awhile for the app to open up again, but once it did it proceeded to close and then re-open again. This is very strange. I don’t want to reset my Shield back to factory settings and have to reinstall everything (I have Tivimate and it took me forever to get the Shield to finally recognize my SSD to record on), but I’m wondering if that’s my only possible solution.
Also: my Plex server is on my PC hard drive, which I access through the Shield Plex app.
I have a similar issue on all my Android TV devices, including shield. The app will frequently restart when seeking (skipping back or forward) on a stream.
