New files are not being added even though it is in the folder and the scanner shows it

Hi All,

I’ve been having issues that my new files since the Nov 10 are not being added/ are not showing up on my plex server even if it exist on the proper folder. Media name is also correct.

A good example would be a rick and morty S04E01 file that is in my folder and after reading the logs, the scanner picks up. Unfortunately it does not show. I’ve provided my logs and maybe someone can help me figure out what to do.

I already tried rebuilding my database with no success. I even moved some of the missing files to a new folder (called test) and it still does not work.

Server Version#:1.18.2.2029 (x64 windows)
Player Version#: Lastest windows and even webapp.

Two quick suggestions:

  1. Don’t download directly into a directory which PMS monitors. It can cause problems for the scanner.
  2. Your file naming could use some work. This support article outlines what the paths and file names should look like:

Here’s an example of how it should look (macOS example, but you should get the gist):

Hi Philip,

Thanks for the suggestion and I do follow the 1st suggestion… since I download from 1 temp folder first and transfer once it is completed.

As for the naming, I can understand that it would help but the weird thing is that before the upgrade to the latest version, it was identifying just fine. I’m not sure if plex made changes with the scanner but I have one episode named exactly the same as the next episode but it would not detect the newer episode.
For example
Filename: battlestargalactica-S01E01.mkv ->gets detected fine and shows on the list while,
Filename: battlestargalactica-S01E02.mkv -> does not show up the list.

I couldn’t find the reason where the issue is coming from for it not to show on the list.

I can only share my experience and what the guidelines suggest. The spaces (between words in the name and around the dashes) are important. As are the folder paths. The matching logic can be forgiving with non-compliant names and paths; right up to the point where it isn’t.

I’m not saying that this is definitely your issue; however, the first part of determining why this isn’t working is making sure best known practices are followed. Then, when it fails, we know that there is something else going wrong and can investigate further.

If you’d like to try a scan and collect some logs, I’d be happy to look at them.

And if you need a utility to help you get your naming/paths sorted out, check out Filebot:

Your file names are wrong - flat wrong - absolutely out of compliance. @pshanew has shown you correct file names.

Plex may work with BAD FILE NAMES, may work for a while, right up until they no longer work. Proper file names - as shown - will always work… unless…

TVDB is broken, like it is now. Anything could happen, or not, and a lot of Not Happening is happening at this time.

While we wait for TVDB to re-appear in this ethereal plane with the rest of us - you can fix your file names.

I’ve been having the same issue. I’ve found that if I downgrade to version plexmediaserver_1.18.0.1944-f2cae8d6b_amd64.deb everything works as expected. Anything newer and Plex simply won’t find it. As soon as I install the old version all the new files show up right away.

Eric, tried your solution (downgrading) and it totally worked! Hopefully it helps other people solve their issues.

Even with proper naming files were not getting added automatically. Must have to do with the latest version.

It’s been a royal PITA. I’ve been using this auto update script for a while https://github.com/mrworf/plexupdate and in order to get my new media I keep having to downgrade.

I have a Synology DS918+. And I’ve been having the same issues since the latest update. New files not being detected. And also the scan not starting when requesting a scan of a library. Last saturday I noticed that the Memory usage was above 90%. Therefore I rebooted the Synology. After reboot I requested a rescan which worked immediately.

Just a couple of minutes ago I again noticed the same issue. This morning I had added three new tv show episodes which did not show up. I tried a rescan, which did not start. Again I noticed the Memory usage being above 90%. This time I restarted the Plex server. And this time the memory usage went down after a couple of seconds. And immediately after that scanning was possible again.

Therefore my assumption is that there is a memory leak in the scanning process. Could somebody look into this? When googling you can find several posts on the web regarding the scanning not working properly, or even people losing a complete library for music for instance. There seem to be major issues with the scanning process.

I’m a lifetime Plex Pass user. And I would really appreciate it if this issue is solved soon!

I wonder if anybody from the Plex team as acknowledged this issue. I just had to downgrade from 1.18.3.2129 to 1.18.0.1944 yet again to get my new media to show up. Everything works perfect in 1.18.0.1944, but any newer version doesn’t find any new media. It’s rather annoying to not have my new stuff show up and continually have to keep downgrading.

I too have to downgrade yet again from the latest version. I have not see this issue been acknowledge by the Plex team. Hopefully the Plex team acknowledges this as an issue!

Now I’ve got a new issue. Plex version 1.18.4.2164 now fails to be recognized on any of my players. I still have to keep downgrading to version 1.18.0.1944 to make everything work as expected. WHAT IS GOING ON PLEX?!?!
