Problems with Remote Access to Plex Server

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: –

Hi all,
So the problem is that I no longer have remote access to my Plex server, the dreaded, “Not available outside of your network.” error.

Steps I’ve taken:
-Completely reinstall Plex Server, deleting all files and registry entries.
-Open up custom ports on the router for Plex, as well as the 32400 which I had opened before, to test on other ports.
-Put the server in the DMZ on the router.
-Check for double NAS (Router is plugged directly into modem, which the computer is plugged in via Ethernet.)
-Checked Windows Firewall to see if it was being blocked
-Deleted firewall entries and re-enabled them
-Tried installing an older version of Plex

None of these have worked unfortunately, so I’m uploading a log and hoping for help.

As a side note, it always flashes to the green fully accessible before going to the red not accessible message.

some questions…

  1. did remote access work for you before and is now broken or is this about getting it to work for the first time?
  2. have you tested accessing your Plex Media Server from outside your network? sometimes the indicator goes to “red” despite remote access actually being active/enabled

Bonus question…

Can you access your modem’s public IP address and the forwarded port from outside your network? you can check this e.g. using a service such as canyouseeme.org (they should be able to automatically detect your public IP address).
If this isn’t working, the issue is probably between your ISP and your modem/router; if the IP/port is accessible but Plex isn’t available remotely, the issue is probably inside your home network and/or the server you have Plex installed on.

Hi Tom! Thanks for the response!

  1. Remote Access has worked in the past, I’ve been using it for years now.
  2. I have been able to use indirect connections on some media players, but not all. My iPad 1 and desktop at my other apartment are no longer able to see it at all.

Bonus Answer:
Success: I can see your service on xx.xxx.xx.xx on port ( 32400 )
Your ISP is not blocking port 32400

From canyouseeme.org

Thanks again!

Mod Edit: hid user public IP

you have me confused… is it working (indirect or not) for some devices and not for others or is it not working at all?

It is working indirectly for some devices. My brother was able to log in using indirect access on his Roku at home.

Just tested it on a 3g iPad as well – it is working with indirect access as well.

ok… that’s a good sign.
it means you can access your content remotely, but the connection is being established via a server of Plex. this usually happens if there’s some hiccup in the remote access configuration or along the communication chain.

just a few things for you to double-check:

  • check your router configuration if you have reserved/assigned a fixed internal IP to the computer/NAS running your PMS
  • double-check the remote access settings within Plex Web… for your port forward to be used, you need to tell Plex about it – sometimes users forget to check Manually specify public port and to enter the actual port you assigned in your router

Tom, you are the best. I didn’t think for 32400 I had to manually specify it, as it was default. Now that I have, it works perfectly. Thank you so much, I just spent like 6 hours playing with settings and totally missed such an obvious option. Have a wonderful day, and a happy holiday season, if you happen to like such things.
