Recently my plex server has started advising that it’s remote access is not available. I “retry” and it goes green, then after about 30 seconds it goes red again.
But it seems to be working. And not “indirectly” that I can tell. This from the dashboard
So I don’t understand why it keeps disconnecting. Or appearing to. And still working. I’ve gone through the remote access troubleshooting but none of that seems to apply here. That I can tell anyway.
The issue is that it sometimes stops working remotely and I really don’t know until one of my kids lets me know. And as they are in other countries this isn’t always at a convenient time to say the least
Re your first screenshot: if you tick the checkbox “Manually specifiy…” it means that you have to create a “port forwarding” in the settings of your router.
And maintain that port forwarding, as well (e.g. adapt its target IP in case the Plex server machine on your local network has changed its local IP address.)
from my personal computer fails. Immediately. (192.168.100.3 being the plex server).
I had thought “firewall” but then I tested same on the server. Also fails. And fails after entirely disabling the firewall. I can only connect directly to the plex server from the console via localhost:32400.
I do have other software on this server (e.g. sonarr) which I normally use localhost but just testing and they work fine using the server IP. It’s just plex that fails.
Suggestions on where to look next? This doesn’t make sense to me TBH.
As for the remote access issue… any additional suggestion will require your input based on the individual findings from the troubleshooting guide (beyond „it’s not working“).
The /web doesn’t make any difference. Fails quickly with
# This site can’t be reached
The connection was reset.
In terms of the troubleshooting I’m looking at (2) Common “inside your home network” issues as clearly it should work internally and if that’s not working it’s not going to work externally. It also says it’s not a router issue. Working though each suggestion:
Segmentation: None - all one network 192.168.100.0/24
Firewall/security tools: Disabled windows firewall and defender, no change
Windows profile: confirmed private network
Bad Plex remote access configuration: not really sure what to check here but 32400 is the standard port and I haven’t changed this
So I’ve tried changing the remote port to 9112 and now it works. I had been using 48xxx (can’t remember exactly) and that used to work. Then tried 32400 and that definitely won’t work suggesting it’s blocked by my ISP or something.
It also still wont’ let me connect locally via 32400 to that computer. My other plex server (that I setup to test this all) works fine this way. Nevertheless, I don’t care as now the remote access is working and seems to be stable.
