HEVC files play fine on PS4, but struggle to play on PS5. It’s even worse when subtitles are involved.
This issue has been ongoing for a few years now.
My Plex Server runs on a Lubuntu Intel Pentium Silver NUC , with enough power to transcode around 5 to 6 1080p streams at once, but ideally, PS5 should be capable of using Direct Play / Stream without transcoding.
Mine direct streams HEVC with no problems. I’ve only run across one file that pauses for a few frames every couple of seconds when transcoding due to subtitles but pausing it and letting it buffer for a bit before resuming playback seems to fix it. My server is pretty old so I suspect it’s more the weak CPU than the PS5 with the problem.
I doubt that it is a server CPU issue.
I have no trouble on the PS4, or PC, even when transcoding.
PS5 simply won’t direct stream or direct play most of the time, struggling to deal with HEVC files.
Occasionally an HEVC file will work flawlessly, even transcoded with subtitles. I just don’t get what the issue is with PS5.
