One of my users showed me that their PS5 Plex app skips ahead a few seconds randomly during playback of an x265 movie. Played file locally at the exact timestamp where it happens to them - fine. Played file on remote PlexWeb as well - fine. Confirmed with them that their PS5 app is the latest version available from the Playstation store. There are multiple posts on this problem, and theyâre all closed so I canât add on / reply to them. Some are from over a year ago. And no helpful replies from Plex staff on any of them.
Has the Plex team acknoweldged this issue and is there a timeline for a fix?
Itâs because PS5 doesnât support x265. In the app go to settings>video and untick âdirect streamâ - itâll play transcoded but keep the quality and it doesnât skip
Iâve managed to narrow this issue down to having SRT subtitles (not burned-in) enabled. Iâve played multiple 4K HDR HEVC files and donât experience skipping issues unless I enable subtitles (not burned-in).
Other than this issue, the PS5 Plex app is fairly solid.
Googling PS5 x265 the first page of results all say itâs not supported without conversion. there is some contention on the top result reddit post.
I have seen a couple reddit pages saying it can direct play 265 but none of my 265 mkvâs can. they do direct stream to the PS5 app but 4K ones skip, as per the OP. Tautulli says itâs converting the container from mkv to mp4. Are your 4Ks mkv or mp4?
I have a gigabit cabled connection PS5 end and the Plex front end which is an M1 Mac mini so itâs not a bandwidth issue.
Unticking direct stream fixes it and the transcode quality is just as good for me, maybe you need to tweak your transcoder quality. The M1 doesnât support hardware transcoding so that experimental encoder is set to never.
