PS5 Plex App

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

PS5 Plex works on my console for the Plex content, but accessing my sons Plex Media server states unreachable or offline. However the LG TV Plex app on my TV works fine - except for the buffering issues. So can Plex explain why the Plex app links fine to both my PS5 and my LG TV but does not show the remote media on the PS5 app version but does on the LG TV app version? This is either a Plex PS5 app bug or a Sony PS5 is bug. Come on guys get your act together. This is a Plex app unfit for purpose as both have varying issues. I fixed this yesterday. By default, PS5 will have chosen 0.0.0.0 as the DNS setting - it must get it from Sony - anyway - override the Primary and Secondary DNS IP addresses with the Primary and Secondary DNS IP address set up in your router.
For me, a uk user, I am with BT internet and the primary and secondary DNS IP addresses are 81.139.57.100 and 81.139.56.100 - you may be using 8.8.8.8 for example - find a decent DNS server best for you - and make sure both your router and PS5 have the same DNS primary and secondary - plex will now work. Its Sony’s issue - not plex’s. Enjoy your media.

Thanks Carla,

Did the using of public DNS on both just the PS5 and that did not work, so altered the settings on the Vodafone router itself and that also did not work. Although the public DNS did improve the router performance.

This Plex app did actually work on my PS4 and also the PS5 when I switched over. However in the last month both Sony & Plex have released Plex app updates.

I set the Plex app up for my smart LG TV, that uses WebOS and the Plex app works. So this is 100% an incompatibility on either Sony or Plex. The Plex media server I am going to is based in the USA, I’m in the U.K.

So currently I am checking the technical requirements for the Plex App to Plex server at the moment. There are many, many people complaining about their lack of access. However most are just issues with their Plex media server being on a different local lan subnet on their local home network. Remotely located Plex servers have additional issues like file permissions, VPNs and Proxies - so I will figure it out.

Thank once again for your time replying. It is much appreciated.

LIke you, I haev a PS4 and it all worked fine, until I added my PS5 into the mix (my ps4 is now disconnected as I can play all my ps4 games on the ps5) but using a DNS that your ISP recommends may be the solution, rather than using the 8.8.8.8 - what system are you running plex from? I use a synology NAS - if you are using a NAS, are you seeing the server appear in the plex list on your PS5, but it just shows as “Unavailable” rather than not being listed?
I think the key is going to be the DNS - I tried everything, from changing settings in Plex (and locking myself completely out of it lol so I had to rebuild it which took a day) but it definitely worked for me as soon as I matched the DNS IP on my router and used the same DNS setting in the PS5.
Give me some info on your setup, I might be able to suggest something else for you.

Carlh,

The router originally was set to automatic. And the PS5 was the same. It work after ps4 switch over but stopped about 3-4 weeks ago. I can see all the Plex stream content but not my son’s Plex Server in the USA. I altered my Vodafone dns to an improved public DNS and got a better bandwidth throughput. The PS5 app was still working and PS5 dns settings were automatic - a Sony will use the router’s DNS settings. I tried your suggestion to set the PS5 dns manually to the same as the router is currently working with. No change. I still see the Plex website streaming content but the remote Plex server in USA still has error of “unreachable or offline”. However my LG Smart TV Plex app reaches the Plex website and I connect to my son’s remote Plex server via the my same Vodafone router with my manual DNS settings. Sony cannot assign the DNS as it needs a valid DNS server to actually sign the PS console onto the PS Network and the local home network router does that assignment - it should never be assigned 0.0.0.0 by Sony site. The issue will be an incompatibility of firmware and OS levels between Sony / Plex / and the Remote Plex Server itself. I am currently looking at all technical requirements needed on the Remote Plex Media Server in the USA to ensure that it is fully compatible with Plex App on Sony PS and after that it’s the same search between Sony and Plex. I’m a 65 year old early retired Technical Support specialist - so will work this out. PS: I plugged in my old PS4 and the Plex App works perfectly. I don’t like using my old PS4 as it was one of the units that had a fan noise like a jet engine, mostly when local game were using local processing and network access at the same time.

Old guy who worked on ICL George 3 mainframes, then ICL VME, then IBM and ICL linked via ICL DRS6000 unix system using X25 comms then Windows DOS, Windows 3.1 and NT then Win 75 and so on. Plus all the networking via Cisco and VLANs - so I will solve it. My bitching is the fact I should not have to be doing this. I have my Computer Science Masters and have the skills / however I believe it’s unfair IT suppliers leave the job mostly to companies using their kit or worse unskilled home users who really don’t have the necessary skills.

Again thank you for your reply.

OK - all fixed and running now. The problem was that Plex Media Servers if remote or local MUST be kept fully patched. By this I mean ALL hardware must be highest certified firmware for BIIS and GPUs and motherboard. Then once on the best firmware level the IS being used must be fully supported by Plex and kept full patched. If using a UNIX OS the permission for remote file access must be correct. On other OS systems the same but also the disks should be (if possible, matching types for best performance). On a home network Plex media server should be on Sam local subnet and any tomfoolery with double NAT “for security reasons” should be reconsidered as playing with double NAT is complex and there are easier ways to achieve the same results. The local subnet might be an issue for users running Plex Media Servers on a virtual Server. Any my own problems were all related to my son installing the Plex server about 4-5 years ago, increasing disk space over time however never doing any hardware firmware updates or UNIX OS updates. The Plex app being used to access a server local or remote should support the codecs on the non server hardware otherwise Plex tries to convert to a supporting option and the user normally experiences buffering. Finally all broadband is sold to users with a “contention ratio” this could be as low as 5:1 or as high as 20000:1, what is it? It is the broadband provider over selling limits. The provider has X amount of bandwidth which they sell to more people than can use it at full capacity so if you are having slow response chances are the provider has over sold on their physical bandwidth capacity meaning everyone using it get knocked back to lower levels. Corporate networks use private leases lines where upload and download bandwidth are equal and guaranteed. However they cost the Earth. Home business user might look at home business broadband options if available they are lower contention ratio guaranteed and have repair times specified for the users. Hope this helps.
