Strange issue that I can't figure out. Downloaded the Plex App for PS3 and it can't locate my local Plex Server.
Plex Server is running: 0.9.11.13
Android/Apple clients can play just fine. Even the DLNA works on the PS3 but NOT the app.
Any thoughts? Server is running 2012 R2 OS.
Bump...anyone have any solutions?
I'm having a similar issue. The regular media server works fine, but the Plex app can't seem to connect to my server. I can get a menu sometimes, but if I try to select any category, I get the "Make sure server is online" message.
double check guys make sure plex is showing connected under settings/server/connect that seems to be a problem for some routers not fowarding ports correctly.

Confirmed Plex is showing me successfully signed in and external port is mapped successfully.
Another question: If the PS3 is on my internal LAN along with my Plex Server why is everyone saying the PS3 needs the external mapping? Does the PS3 reach out over the internet to hit my Plex server over the externally mapped port.

No. Plex doesn't require external port mappings for an internally hosted server regardless of the platform you're using to watch the media.
I would change the "Update Channel" setting in the PMS > General > Advanced settings back to "Stable". Seems to be a lot of people on the PlayStation section of these forums having issues with the "Plex Pass" build you're using.

I originally had it on the stable channel for a week and it was still not working. Since then I switched to Plex Pass hoping an advance update would help.
Have you tried deleting and re installing the app on PS3?
Had the same issue, I disabled the firewall in my router and then I could connect to my server. Don't know why that helped though since both server and client is on my home network..
SOLVED!
It seems the Plex App for PS3 does in fact reach out to the plex server's external interface during the initial connection. I was using a VPN for all my outbound traffic, which the PS3 used. Well VPN's are not the best for routing inbound traffic...so essentially the PS3 was unable to contact my Plex server. It wasn't until I removed the PS3's traffic from my VPN tunnel that it immediately saw the Plex server.
The better question is why does the PS3 app need to reach out externally to verify my Plex server...?

I believe has to do with needing a plex pass right now sence the app is in beta and that could be only way for them to stop people from trying to cheat the system.

That actually makes sense. I just hope Plex opens up the App to everyone AND eliminates the external check for subscription.
Lots of speculation, let me explain.
We get your PMS server IP from our website. Running PMS behind a VPN messes up the information that PMS publishes to our website. The public IP of your PMS server is different than the public IP of your PSX. Please see https://forums.plex.tv/topic/150101-the-problem-with-vpns/for the full run-down.
