QNAP Plex Media Server - Can't Claim Server

Server Version#: Firmware version 4.4.3.1400 Build 20200817
Player Version#: Version 1.20.1.3252

I’ve used and loved Plex for years on my QNAP server.

I upgraded my router, and Plex stopped being accessible from one of my two Rokus. Basic troubleshooting didn’t resolve it. I then updated QNAP QTS and Plex server version, and Plex no longer works at all.

I can reach the Plex Server from http://serverip:32400/web and I can see my media though none of it will play. When trying to play media I get the error “Playback Error Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.”

The issue seems to be that the server is unclaimed. When I click to claim the server it spins and nothing happens.

I’ve tried the troubleshooting steps I’ve seen posted here with no luck, though I am happy to re-try any step should that be suggested.

Thank you in advance for any support available.

Please go to Control Panel - Shared Folders
Look for a PlexData share.
If you have one – edit the share permissions to give yourself access
If you can’t edit the access ( a problem for some ) – delete the share and recreate it wherever you want then restart Plex.

After that initialization / setup step -

FileStation - PlexData - Plex Media Server

Right-click Logs
Compress to ZIP
when done, download and attach there.

I suspect the new router config and IP addresses which exist don’t align.

Good Morning,

I’m sure you are busy @ChuckPa, or anyone else who can assist, but I’d appreciate any suggestions.

I’d love to get my Plex back in working order…

I greatly appreciate any support.

Thank you!

@TeddyBearSuicide

I’m sorry for not seeing this earlier. I don’t know why I wasn’t notified.

I looked at the logs.

I’d like to perform a soft-reset of the ownership if you’re up to it.

Using the PlexData share and the QNAP text editor, this isn’t a complex task.

How do you feel about a little surgery? :smiling_imp:

Check your PM please

Success! I have my Plex back!

Update for future reference:

@ChuckPa was very helpful, thank you! Chuck narrowed it down to the issue most likely being my ISP, as I was only able to connect to Plex.tv when I turned my VPN on. The VPN then complicated the issue of claiming my server. Chuck very nicely explained that until I could access Plex.tv directly without my VPN on, I wouldn’t be able to claim my server.

Before calling my ISP, I did some googling about my new router (Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro) and the issues I was having accessing Plex.tv directly. I did the following steps:

  • I updated to google’s DNS on my UDM Pro
  • I tried accessing plex.tv to no avail.
  • I removed the Geofiltering I had turned on on my UDM Pro
  • I tried accessing plex.tv to no avail.
  • I turned off Windows firewall on my laptop.
  • I tried accessing plex.tv to no avail.
  • Out of desperation, I restarted my UDM Pro.
  • When the UDM Pro restarted, I was able to access Plex.tv!
  • I logged in to the ip address of my plex server, clicked to claim the server and it worked!
  • I have now successfully played my Plex files from three separate devices.
  • I’ve turned Windows Firewall back on, with no ill effects.
  • I have not yet turned back on Geo filtering on my UDM Pro, though will come back and update if that breaks things when I do.

Thank you @ChuckPa for all of your help!

I’m glad you resolved it.

So it was GeoIP filtering Plex’s server in Ireland?
