QNAP & Plex Media Server (PMS)

Server Version#: 4.57.4 (Shown in Web interface)
Server Version#: 1.23.2 per QNAP AppCenter and the installer package
Player Version#: n/a

I’ve been dealing with an issue for many months where I could not launch Plex from within QNAP and access it. I kept running into an issue that basically said it was unreachable, or that my server denied access.

ip_address denied access

After searching online and through various related threads here, I eventually stumbled onto a solution for my issue.

Here’s the short verdict: Plex was NOT providing me with the most up to date installer for my QNAP.

I had trouble logging in using the local IP address for my QNAP. Connection failed for whatever reason. After looking online, I found that I could login using this URL: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/

I didn’t like that method, because I had to go out to the Internet just to login to my local Plex Media Server. Imagine if I didn’t already have Remote Access enabled, I probably would have never accessed my Plex Server again… until now.

When I logged in using the URL above, I would see a notification that an update was available for download. I used the provided link to download the offered package, logged into my QNAP and manually installed it.
I would test access using the local IP address and it would continue to fail. This went on for over a year now, and at least a dozen PMS package upgrades.

Just a moment ago, I decided to look into this again. As I was reading though endless posts, I saw one person who had the Plex Downloads link, and I decided to take a look.

What I found was that the current version for QNAP is v1.23.2.4600.
The version I just installed just last week was v1.23.1.4571.
When I logged into Plex using the aap.plex.tv URL I provided above, there was another update available message and it was offering me another v1.23.1.xxxx version just higher than the .4600 I had installed.
In other words, Plex was not offering me the one I just installed. It’s as if it kept offering me a version or two out of date.

Regardless of the reason, this post is to inform others who are currently updating their Plex using the same method I was using.
1. I log in
2. Plex says, “hey, you go this update available
3. I download and install and issue not resolved.

However, perhaps Plex will look into this and see why the LATEST version is not being offered when Users login to the web interface and see an update notification.

The PMS v1.23.2.4600 I downloaded from Plex Downloads was installed and now I can access my Plex server using the local IP address… which is the only way I want to access it via a web browser.

v1.23.1.4602 is the current release:

v1.23.2.4600 is the current beta test version (aka Plex Pass download):

Both are absolutely available for download form https://Plex.tv/download but you need you make sure you have that “Plex Pass Download” switch flipped correctly.

You also need to check which you have selected on your PMS in settings:

Then you’ve highlighted another issue, considering I just downloaded and installed Plex for QNAP, tested it and then made my post to share my findings. :+1:

I just checked and will now update my Plex for QNAP.

Thanks!

OK, I just saw your screenshots. For some reason I thought those were ads in the thread and ignored them.

I just went back and saw what you’re talking about.
I have a lifetime Plex Pass, so I assume that’s the one I should be using on my QNAP?

If so, then I’m up to date.

Plex Pass just means you have the honour (?) of beta testing their stuff for them. I would recommend you switch that off.

As I wrote, the latest “production” release is v1.23.1.4602, and that’s the version you want to use.
