QNAP Plex Server - Mobile App Chromecast "Unable to play media"

TS859 Pro
Server Version#: 1.9.6.4429
Player Version#: 7.26.0.14578

Windows 10 Laptop
Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156-349e9837e
Player Version#: 7.26.0.14578

I’m experiencing a very perculiar issue on a new setup! Everything aside from Plex Android and iOS Chromecasting appears to be working, including Chromecast through the web GUI, Remote Access, etc.

Context: I originally had a smaller NAS unit that was housing all my media, with the server running on the W10 laptop. I swapped that out for a larger chassis that has better capabilities to run the server and transcode on-board (instead of using the W10 laptop), but which is older and doesn’t support the more current versions of Plex.

The old server running off the W10 laptop still works perfectly fine in all aspects (when I have it on, have tried closing it and having only one running at any time). By comparison, the on-board server on the TS-859 does everything except Chromecast from iOS and Android devices. “Unable to play media” is the only information communicated through the Plex app. The logs don’t mean as much to me as they will to some of the gurus in the community which is why they are attached below!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to tell you this but your NAS really is not capable of being a full Plex server, transcoding will be a problem.

If I may add,

The TS-859 Pro was removed from our compatibility list due to being QTS revision frozen by QNAP.

Thank you both for your responses!

The 859 is still a step up on the previous chassis in terms of bays, so removing my old laptop from running the server was going to a bonus that I wouldn’t be fully able to assess unless I got the server up and working. The majority of my media doesn’t require transcoding, so it would have been handy for the 1% that does.

I did notice it wasn’t on the compatibility list, but there also wasn’t a changelog or decomissioned list to check it against either. I did also notice I couldn’t get up to current Plex builds due to the QTS lockout which wasn’t neccesarily a deal breaker for me (as long as it worked!)

However, none of these things are direct responses to the issue I have. I take it no support will be forthcoming as it is no longer a supported model and can’t get up to current builds?

I can provide educational and operational support for what you have but anything which requires a software change (bug fix) won’t be available.

At some point, it will stop working entirely (its link with Plex.tv).

Regarding a “deprecated/obsoleted” status indicator in the NAS guide; I will start back filling those NAS vendors for which I have information. I see where it would be good to definitively know the status.

Perfect, I certainly don’t expect software fixes for old tech.

If there are any major issues in the logs that you can see that could be easily rectified on my end, that would be super as Chromecast is the only way I access my server.

Otherwise, the old laptop will go back to running the server like it always has!

FYI, long time user of Plex, almost a decade. First time I’ve needed to post on the forums, so it’s fair to say I’m pretty happy with Plex!
