QNAP TS-230 Support

A few minor details to start, I have a relatively new QNAP TS-230 running plex media server (“Slutlocker”), updated to current version 1.21.3.4021-5a0a3e4b2 as of 2/8/2021. It has a hardwired ethernet connection to an ethernet switcher then to a router. Media is played on a nvidia shield pro over the same connection, also hardwired to the ethernet switcher then to a router.

I have an additional plex server (“Matty”) running on my computer, works fine, no connectivity issues, no concerns there.

The server has been working smoothly and no connection issues for the past few weeks. Within the past couple days (possibly since updating to newest pms), the NAS has failed to connect with plex/“plex is currently unavailable.” I’ve troubleshooting on my my own using the FAQS, but I’m a novice at this. Any help you could provide to get my plex server up and running would be much appreciated.

I’ve included recent debug logs for evidence of failed connections.

Debug Logs 2.10.21.zip (5.3 KB)

that file is not a server log. Not sure what it is but RTF files are definitely not server logs.

Install this package

It was written by one of the Plex Ninjas (moderators).

It will create a shared folder on your QNAP which points directly into where PMS is.
It will allow you to make a ZIP of the “Logs” directory you can then download and attach here.

Here is the logs directory using the program you sent:

download_2021-02-11_19-50-42.zip (22.4 MB)

I’ve also been looking into this more. It seems that the PMS on the QNAP will disconnect and give me the “server unavailable” only when trying to play media directly via my Nvidia shield tv pro. If I reboot the QNAP, I am able to access my media content using my computer. I can even cast content to the Nvidia shield through my computer. However, when I try to use the Shield to access content directly, the connection immediately stops.

I’m wondering if I need to change settings and establish a static IP? Or something having to do with secure/insecure connections? Maybe then the Shield will be able to connect to QNAP like before.

Thank you for the help

Thanks for the logs.

The server itself is running correctly. I think, in the upgrade, communication with Plex.tv was a bit confused. It does happen.

I think you’re also saying the QNAP is on a dynamic IP address ? If so, then it is a good idea to give it a static IP address (either hard defined or by DHCP reservation in the modem/router). Static IP makes it easier for you to get to it no matter what happens.

If you set to static , be certain to restart the QNAP (yes, it’s slow to do it … )

To get your apps back in sync with the server,

  1. Plex/web → Settings → Authorized Devices ( upper left corner ) → Server (dropdown)

  2. See if your server is listed twice. If so, delete (Remove) the oldest one.

  3. Now restart PMS on the QNAP and give it a minute to stabilize

  4. Terminate (using the app kill in Shield Experience) the Plex app (it always sits in the background.

  5. Open Plex from your server (you can use the App Center icon) and make sure it’s communicating there.

  6. Start the shield app again. (it will ask Plex.tv where the server is and will be ok)

This seems to have worked. Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction with regards to setting a static IP
