QNAP TS-439 Pro II FW 4.2.6 support for AppleTV

Server Version#: 3.23.1
Player Version#: 7.11 (appleTV)

I am in a complete limbo.
I cannot upgrade my qnap Plex due to missing support from you guys for older fw.
At the same time my appleTV plex install no longer supports the running server version - rendering my install useless.

I am not willing to trash a perfectly fine working NAS just because there seems to be compatibility issues.

Hence my question:
Will you support QNAP < 4.3 sometime in future?
else can I downgrade the player on my appleTV to a working version and how?
If both is a no you have officially lost me as with this situation I can no longer use plex.

I don’t think you can downgrade apps on the Apple TV.
From what I’ve been reading, the QNAPs with QTS 4.2 or earlier are now also out of support by QNAP themselves as well and don’t provide parts of the toolchain required by newer releases of the Plex Media Server. Therefore I deem it unlikely they’ll “post mortem” introduce support for those old platforms again.

I hate to say this but with software on an outdated platform you need to keep an eye on those dependencies and e.g. disable automatic updates for your players/clients.

TL;DR: No need to waste an otherwise still (mostly) good NAS… you could use it as storage for a dedicated server (e.g. using some mini PC like a NUC or RPi… or go for a Shield as your server instead).

Hey Tom.
I do understand your reasoning, but have to say plex would be wise to do a better job at backwards compatibility as I am guessing anlogt of users do have older but well working hardware.
I do admit I am also extremely annoyed at Qnap for not even adding a paid support subscription.

Making sure not to install newer plex players that are no longer supporting older servers… well, as my AppleTV does auto-update…

I did find a solution however:
Infuse still supports my plex server - kudos to them doing a better job here.

So I can keep the setup and just stop using plex player altogether.
Wouldn’t you agree that if infuse can do it there seems no obvious reason plex could not implement more compatibility.
Best, Gerd
