QNAP TS431X - Not enough bandwidth even if set to unlimited

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151
Player Version#: iOS v. 8.9, various other.

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to setup Plex to be reachable via remote access: everything done but I can’t play anything on my smartphone (iPhone 12 Pro) receiving a message which tells me there’s not enough bandwidth to direct play and not enough CPU to transcode.

As the CPU of TS-431X is something embarassing I’m not expecting it to transcode.

Looking at the network, the NAS where Plex is running is linked via a 2 Gbit trunk to my main switch, then to the firewall where there is a 1000/500 FTTH line.

Real upload speed is 465-480 Mbps so I’m expecting to stream multiple 4K sources.

In the error message it says the bandwidth is 3000 kbps, but I have no limits set on the host.

The only differences on my Plex are:

  • Secure connection required instead of preferred (tried to roll back)
  • A different port on WAN side
  • Internet upload speed set to 480 Mbps and no limits on upstream

I’m planning to move Plex on a server, but I think that won’t solve this issue

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? I’m particularly interested if the stream is displayed as remote or indirect. An indirect connection would imply an issue with your remote access configuration.

Exemplary screenshot from the "now playing" section

“Nothing is currently being played”, as the stream won’t start.

If a play a song, which start, it shows “remote”.

Also, I disabled the “Relay” proxy. (I have a static IP).

Check for bandwidth restrictions on the iPhone.

Plex clients default to 2 Mbps for remote connections.

Settings → Quality for Android devices, should be similiar for iOS.

Auto Adjust Quality = Off
Limit Cellular Data = Off
Remote streaming quality = Maximum.

That did the job!

My limit, on iOS was 3 Mbps.

Settings → Quality, set to Maximum and everything started working.

Now I only have to solve problems with transcoding, which will be done moving to the server.

Many thanks!
