Question about rotten tomatoes ratings

Hey all.
For some reason newly added movies were just recently picking up IMDB ratings only.
I’m pretty sure the order of the agents didn’t change or at least not intentionally.

I seemed to have fixed it going forward but there are a few movies that whatever I do seem reluctant to pick up RT ratings.
I have seen this before with some older or more vague movies and that’s fine.
However the movie Venom(2018) is one example of the movies that persist with IMDB ratings only.
So.

  1. Does anyone get RT ratings for that movie?
  2. If that’s the case then how do I finally get it to update to an RT rating. (Plexdance perhaps?)

Thanks in advance.

In addition to agents, check the settings for each movie library.

Library additions use whatever settings are in effect when they are added to the library.

To change the ratings source for existing movies, refresh the metadata, either movie-by-movie or for the entire library. A full Plex Dance is not required.

These agent settings are global. They are just mirrored into the library properties for convenience.

Good to know. Thanks.

Some follow-up:

I’m seeing the same thing with Venom. It does not pick up the Rotten Tomatoes rating for some reason.

I’ve a few other movies with the same behavior.

I don’t see a pattern with the movies that do not pick up RT ratings. They’re definitely in the RT database, I can view them on the RT web site. Not sure why Plex won’t list RT ratings for Venom & others.

Yeah I actually tried that.
Interestingly the same movies grab IMDB ratings regardless on both my (mirrored) servers. Plus I have 4K copies of some of them and again they only pull IMDB ratings.
Meanwhile other movies I added yesterday seemed to pull RT ratings just fine.
The ones that i notice immediately that are only getting IMDB ratings are
Venom, BlacKkKlansman & Widows.

Ah good to know thanks.
I looked on RT itself too. As you say there doesn’t seem to be a pattern at all.

Some more digging. Searched the forum for “Rotten” and picked up several hits.

PMS pulls metadata from meta.plex.tv, not directly from IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, etc.

For whatever reason, some movies do not have RT info listed at meta.plex.tv.

For example:
12 Strong has info from both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes
https://meta.plex.tv/m/1413492

Line 6: imdb_ratings audience_score="66" source="imdb"/
~Line 30: ratings critics_rating="Rotten" critics_score="52" source="rotten_tomatoes" audience_rating="Spilled" audience_score="63"/

Venom only has info from IMDB
https://meta.plex.tv/m/1270797

imdb_ratings audience_score="68" source="imdb"/

This article shows how to add the OpenMovieDatabase scraper to Plex. It can pull in ratings from Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB. Haven’t tried it, but might be a way to fill in the missing RT ratings.

Cool, heading off out now for the afternoon so will take a look when I get home.
Much appreciated.

I’ve been experiencing the same results with movies like “Venom” and others, as of the past year or so.

You recently needed a private API key in order to use the OMDb agent you linked to above - years of history behind this. But GitHub now lists the API as “offline”

That would explain why after following the guide it still didn’t work. :grinning:

So much for that. Thanks for the update.
