So since Christmas I have been working on understand the DVR and now that I have it sorted I am noticing two things. If I select New and Repeat airings to catch up on past episodes its recording even if the airing is already in the library. (Same Library they all go in. They are not moved) Secondly this is creating multiple copies of the show in the shows folder as copy 1 copy 2 etc. It seems there is no logic to know its already in the library. I also confirmed that the replace with higher resolution option is not checked for this show. Am I missing something on this?
Secondly if it does detect that its already in the library it would be nice to have an icon that says DUP or something instead of just staying blue in the recording schedule with no play button so you know it worked and was not an error like the yellow triangle ones.
Wish there was a New and/or not in Library Setting. Thanks for the help.
I have seen others mention this same issue. I do not get duplicate recordings, if they already exist in my library it doesn’t show in recording schedule that it will be recorded. Can you provide logs covering a time when a duplicate episode was recorded, might have to wait until the next duplicate episode is recorded. Can you also provide screenshots showing the library settings, all three screens (General, Add folders, and Advanced) multiple screenshots if necessary to display all options on each screen, the recording settings - all screens with all options, the physical files on disk showing the duplicates for a recording covered in the logs. Are you doing any post processing, if you are what is the post processing doing to the recordings. I would like to try to figure out what is happening but from the other posts not much was discovered.
Thanks for the help and I can supply those files. Its just weird. Here is files I have on this one. The logs have been overwritten. so I will catch that on the next one and upload them here.
My script just takes in the file from the .grab directory that plex sends it processes it and then deletes the orig *.ts file and replaces it with the mkv file and then plex moves it to the correct show/season folder. digitalmindset.net/pics/Plex/Plex_Dup.zip
EDIT: I removed the pictures and put them in this ZIP due to the number of them making this post look annoying.
So in looking through the logs I did find this. But this was after the show stopped recording today when it looks like the EPG updated.
I am wondering if at first when they got scheduled it was not in the library but it recorded it but it seems to only update if its going to record or not when it does an EPG update. I also did look at there is another instance of this show according to the file below on 1-19 at 1am and its not listed in the Scheduled Recordings now. Not sure if it was before the update. But it seems that the EPG update may be what is missing if its there or not.
I had this problem happen with PBS as well. Not always, just intermittently. The last occurrence I had was on Milk Street. They have started showing SD versions on a sub-channel and it was recording those even though I have the HD versions recorded from the PBS prime channel in my library. I changed the recording to limit it to recording ONLY off of the prime channel. Fixed the problem.
I wonder if some where its loading the channel with the recording and if its not the same channel it lets it record. That would seems short sighted from a trying to get episodes of older shows. The issue is I have access to 3 different PBS channel groupings so I am using them all to get episodes of shows that have lots of seasons that I don’t have. Either that or the EPG update is not updating correctly for already scheduled recordings and taking them off the list.
I enabled the more freq EPG updates. I will watch it for the next day or so and see if that helps clear out existing recordings from the scheduled list. It would be really nice if they stayed in the list but just put an icon that its already recorded.
Sorry it has taken me a few days to get back to this. Can you post full logs from when this happens? The portions of the log you provided show one of the episodes being moved to the library as an additional copy. I am really interested in why it was even recorded in the first place which is not shown in the log entries you copied. Seems like you had several copies all recorded on the same day/early the next morning at different times so it does not appear to be partial recordings of the episode.
johnm_ColaSC thanks for the help. It happened again with a different show again on PBS called Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Television.
I am working on something to pull logs and keep them longer as in debug its gets wiped out pretty quickly if I dont go pull it.
Here is the log from this.
From looking at the logs it seems to decide if its going to record when the EPG updates so it recording it and showing it in the list seems to be at that point and not right before it records from what i can tell.
I reenabled debug level logs to catch the next one.
Ok. So I canceled a series recording and then added it back in and seems to have cleared up the duplicates in the schedule and all the ones it says it scheduled are not in the library.
I did notice that the episode on this is wrong. See attached graphic. Seems like a grace notes issue. Should be E11 and its showing E13. So not sure which one it matched on.
Going to force an EPG update then look at the logs for the other show. Will update on the show Primal Grill once its done.
Ok so cancelling and re enabling recording for Primal Grill did not work to update what it was recording.
Output is attached. Is there another log that shows the comparisons it decides?

I saw this thread and then thought it was funny… because I record the same show and have the exact same issue as well. I got a duplicate just this morning. I don’t record that many shows, but I get it on Primal Grill with Steven Raichlen and Steven Raichlen’s project smoke.
