Hi, I use Vidcoder for making all my MKV’s. Been trying to get a handle on the whole subtitle thing and I thought I had it down. Normally I create an ISO, then scan to identify the tracks. I then select the subtitles section and pick English BOTH forced and regular, so the result is two tracks ( I use forced as default). My theory was when the mkv played and FORCED subtitles where selected, I should get only the subtitles when foreign language was airing. I just ran into an instance where this didn’t work? X-Men: Apocalypse. The only way I got the subtitles to show was turning the full-time subtitles on, which I’d really like to have a choice? Has anyone else come across this problem?
A forced subtitle, eg… Video.en.forced.srt (if external) will force it to be played when English playback is selected.
If you mark the forced streams for their appropriate languages (example English and Danish), you can have English subtitles displayed when Danish is spoken but also have Danish subtitles displayed when English is spoken.
Some tools make this easy, others are not so easy. I use mkvtoolnix-gui and it is very easy to associate forced subtitles where you wish.
It is important to know there is only one selectable language for the video track. It is my experience to select the most frequently spoken language as the default for the video track. You may choose whatever you wish of course.
