Questions/Frustrations with sync for iOS

Maybe I’m just not understanding how sync should work, but I find the implementation, at least under iOS to be rather frustrating.

We have an iPad that my son uses when we travel, and in the past I’ve synced some material onto it using Plex - mostly kids shows. It works fine. The problem is that 6-12 months later we go on another trip, and I want to put some more stuff on there, and keep the stuff that’s already there. Plex wants to convert all the old shows that are already on the iPad, and then copy them over, as well as convert the new stuff. Plex doesn’t seem to understand that the material is already on the iPad (for example, the server information didn’t show synced material when I checked). This drives me nuts, because it takes a ton of time when it shouldn’t have to, since the material is already there.

To make matters worse, canceling the sync for material that’s already on the iPad means that it can’t be watched at all.

So, is there a way for Plex to look at the device and say “Oh, you have this material already, we’re not going to touch it, we’ll just convert and move the new stuff over”?

No one else has this problem with sync? Maybe I’m doing something wrong…
