Really bad stuttering With Xbox One Plex app

Newest Xbox One Dash / Latest Plex server version

My Plex server is running off of an ASUS ROG temporarily, i7-4700HQ, 12GB Ram, CPU never hits more than 10% even transcoding.

This only started to happen with the new Xbox dash, which was also the case in the preview, which is why I reverted back to the old dash. Had no issues with the old one.

720p MKVs (I haven’t tried MP4 or AVI yet) will stutter signifigantly unless I switch them to 320Kbps. On my SmartTV which is right beside my Xbox, same Wireless, no issues.

The issue with MKV’s direct playing stuttering on the new dashboard should have been fixed by one of the later Microsoft patches. One temporary fix from the old dashboard was to disable direct play in the app which would force the server to remux the mkv into mpegts.

Typically, when having to switch the quality down to improve playback one of two things is happening.

  1. The bandwidth is too much and lowering the quality eases the bandwidth restriction
  2. Lowering the quality forces a video transcode which fixes the container/codec not being liked

Testing for the first situation is really only something you can do as there isn’t anything in the logs that will give us your connection speeds/bandwidth. Normally, I test this by taking a laptop or some other device to the WiFi sand initiate a file copy from the server. This will give you a rough estimate of how fast a device can pull a file from the server.

For situation 2 we would need to see your Plex Media Server.log and the media info for the file being played back to try and determine what in the original file is causing the device to not like the raw file.

There a few other situations that could cause symptoms likes this as well: Media stored on a NAS that is having to be pulled over the network to the Server, low transcode directory space (Which should be prevented in the latest server version), using a single Mechanical drive for media storage and transcode.

Tried to play an MKV file again, 13Mbps over wifi, CPU at 4%. Turned off Directly play, same issue, CPU at 10%.

Played an MP4, works just fine.

Let me see what I can find in the logs.

Side note: I moved this to the Xbox One forum for easier reference for the developers/users

Logs don’t show anything is wrong, from what I can see. Bandwidth seems fine too.

Nov 20, 2015 19:27:33:988 [19144] DEBUG - HLS segment range: 0 - 20; average bitrate: 5.39 Mbps (segment size min/avg/max: 2.7/6.7/11.3)

So shall I just assume this issue could possibly get resolved in an update?

I have the same issue. The stuttering is most obvious with hi def movies from my pc to the xbox one. Sometimes skipping the movie back a few minutes will stop the stuttering temporarily. I have a WD live and have always been able to stream hi def movies on the same network setup without a problem. These are MKVs also.

I was having the same issue and I resolved it by upgrading to the latest Plex Server (0.9.14.4) and preforming a hard reboot of my Xbox One

I am having the same issue. All HD movies stutter badly. This only happened when the update to the new dashboard happened. How do I fix this issue?

The plex server says it is up to date with version 9.12.19. I have hard reset the xbox one a number of times.

The first thing I would try is upgrading your server. The PlexPass version is at 9.14.4 and must be installed manually (No auto-update)

I have server version 0.9.14.4 and the latest dashboard update. Stuttering happens on all 720/1080 MKVs with most of them having AC3 audio (some AAC stereo).

With TV shows, it tends to just happen at the beginning. With movies it tends to happen throughout the film. The movies are higher bitrate. I have several movies that played fine before the new dashboard experience, but all of them stutter on the NXOE.
