So I know there is a sticky here that says RealTek support is being worked on. However that was in November and now it’s a new year so I, and I bet a lot of other people who shelled out cash for these new NAS boxes, want to know what the status is.
It seems strange to me that the sticky states that engineers must benchmark that the RealTek processor can handle PMS when for instance my DS218play can easily play 4K videos through Video Station and handle multiple packages(such as Sonarr, Radarr, Jackett, SABNZBD, Python, Mono) running at the same time easily.
Can we please get some sort of update? Have compilers been obtained and verified at least? Or have you gotten to porting the software and verifying? How far along are you guys?
I am really looking forward to running Plex again ever since moving from a shoddy Seagate Personal Cloud that had Plex. And I am even 95% sure I am going to get Plex Pass so I can make use of your awesome DVR service. But right now things seem bleak because I can’t even install Plex on a brand new model NAS.
Now that everyone is back from holidays (typically the entire month of December has most people using their holiday/vacation time), I will inquire at my next staff meeting (Thursday). If there is any information which I can share, I will advise at that time via the announcement sticky.
Please be advised, since I am largely responsible for packaging and deployment of the NAS packages, Synology and QNAP in particular, when it’s time to prepare a deployable SPK for Synology, I would be the first to know.
Hi Chuck, so how did the meeting go? Any new info? Good news hopefully?
Also, someone in another thread mentioned that Emby already supports RealTek chips. If thats the case then I wonder why it is taking a while for Plex to support them too.
New to Plex, just starting out moving my disc collection after purchasing the DS418play. Since the NAS cannot handle (hope I’m using the right term) software transcoding at this time, I’ve been starting to use Handbrake for all the VC-1 codec blu-rays I find that I have for Roku compatibility.
I’m thinking now, is it better to wait and see if the Realtek processor will be supported? Will it be able to handle VC-1 transcoding and I would have wasted all my time using Handbrake on these VC-1 movies? I’m only using it to encode to H.264 and not for file size reductions so I’d love not to spend my time on them.

Thanks for any thoughts.
Are you sure you’re in the right discussion thread? This is about supporting the RealTek CPU used in certain Synology NAS units. The DS418play is supported. There are other threads discussing what you’re asking. Might you be better served reading & asking in those threads?

I’m sorry, I thought the DS418play was part of this stickied thread “Synology DS118, DS218, and DS418 series advisory (RealTek processors)” about not being supported yet.
Hi, I’d also appreciate an update. I bought a Synology DS218 not knowing that Plex wasn’t available… Now I’m not sure if I should sell it or not. Is there at least an approximate timeline? Thanks, Andy
IF and WHEN there is any information about Realtek processor support for Synology, I will update the announcement and make a new thread with details at that time.
