Recent bufferring issues

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929

So my PMS is remote and I have 300Mbps of link between the two sites. It is also behind a SWAG reverse proxy server. The site where my PMS is has 800Mbps upload BW and the site where my Plex client is (Nvidia Shield Pro) has 300Mbps download BW. I’ve been remote streaming and direct playing everything for quite a while now without any buffering until recently. The buffering seems to be happening after 30 minutes to an hour into the movie. Here are the latest PMS logs:

Plex Media Server.log (8.4 MB)

The movie in question while the issue happened is Uncharted and it happened sometime between 1:00PM to 2:00PM of July 9, 2022. Can you help me check the logs and point as to why it started buffering? I highly doubt it’s a bandwidth issue. The only thing that changed here is the recent Nvidia Shield 9.1 FW update.

@anon18523487 @ChuckPa I appreciate your inputs here. Thanks.

Please provide more of the logs or the full ZIP which captures the start.

The file you provided does not show is the start of the playback.

I will investigate the shield and let you know my results.

Thanks. Here are all the PMS logs:

thank you for the logs.

Your logs are showing transcoding… This shouldn’t be happening with a Shield Pro.
Which Shield do you have?

Did you know the Shield app was updated a few days ago?
I had to fix several of my settings.

Recheck to make certain DirectPlay is allowed, subtitles are automatic, and streaming quality set to the maximum value.

Well, that’s the thing. When I was playing the file, it was directom playing. The info on the stream, in the plex gui, and in tautulli confirm that. It’s always direct playing because, well, it’s a Shield like you said. I’m using the latest and greatest, Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 (not the half-baked tube version).

No, I did not know that the Shield app was updated recently but I did check those settings already and made sure they are what they’re supposed to be (the values you just said).

I updated my shield pro to 9.1 and updated the Plex app to current public release.

I then played Gemini Man (a GOOD test of transcoding at 59.94 FPS and 180 Mbps bit rate)

It played without issue in DirectPlay the entire time. Audio was passed through to my Onkyo

Is your shield on WiFi or wired? My shield is wired.

In the past, I’ve seen 2.4 Ghz WiFi cause problems because a) lower overall bandwidth b) interference from just about every other wireless device out there (2.4 is grossly overloaded).

The difference between our setup is that I’m using the current beta release of the Plex app. Does that account for anything? Do you know why it’s showing transcoding in the logs despite of me seeing direct play everywhere else? You did look at Uncharted in the logs and playing from “Kevin’s Shield”, right? I have other remote users that do transcoding because of either lack of available BW or limited audio support of the playback device. I just want to make sure that we are looking at the correct logs here.

I’m all wired at 1Gbps. I rarely have to transcode with this Shield as I use a Denon x3700H. And even if it is connected thru wifi, I never ever use 2.4GHz if my device supports 5GHz. With wifi, I can gomet a good 300Mbps on my Internet speedtests.
