Recent update causes stutters and audio sync issues

We’ve not had any luck replicating the audio sync and stutter, I have a similar setup to what is described here with an AVR and it doesn’t seem to have any problems.

If you can, could you try this build; https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/10.0.0.3898-0efa8b5/PlexForAndroid-10.0.0.3898-0efa8b5-arm64-v8aGooglePlayRelease.apk (for the Arm64 SHIELD only - every SHIELD except the Tube).

If it’s still a problem, would you be able to disable refresh rate and resolution switching, and verify if that is causing the problem?

I installed the experimental build, but it still has the occasional frame drops with refresh rate switching. I haven’t tried it without refresh rate switching yet though, might have time later.

Note: It took me a while to notice, since it appears to be a single frame that occasionally gets dropped.

There was no difference with refresh rate switching disabled. It still had the occasional single frame drops.

I tried an episode with FLAC 5.1 audio and I didn’t notice any drops. I’ve only seen this issue with audio that’s passed through.

This sounds like the same issue ive seen apple TV people talking about, and im getting as well on mine (and others) Chromecast 4k, and latest Sony TVs
on the chrome cast there is minimal setting i can change but most files play fine, some have a laggy stutter, and are unwatchable.. its a simple setup.. just a chromecast plugged direct into TV.. all these files play perfect on my windows pc app player.
This is the only difference from an encoding point of view on the files.
The Frame rate is consistent with the bad files vs the good, and only on x265 content
23.976024 were always good and this framerate was always bad 23.976216 stuttered weirdly

refresh rate and resolution switching disabled helped a small bit.. maybe, but didnt solve the issue

Had anyone tried the recent releases? I got tired of testing them then having to go back to 9.28.

I’ve tried them all and all have the same problem… don’t understand they can’t reproduce the problem @ plex lab … see what is changed during the last version without the issue (9.28.0.3162) and the one after that and you’ll know where to look, no ?

Yep tried 10.1 issue is still there, so rolled back to 9.28

I saw in a separate thread about a different issue @morganj mention that v9.29 had a player update. I didn’t see this explicitly mentioned in any of the release notes though. Player updates have historically caused playback issues with the Shield. I was just wondering if that player update could be causing issues?

Also, I wanted to note that I’m using a 2019 Shield Pro v8.2.3 (Android 9) since I didn’t before.

I can confirm this issue and that it is resolved by downgrading to 9.28 on my Nvidia Shield. I also fixed another bug like this, which was also likely introduced with 9.29: When starting a slideshow in a photos library for a folder which also has 4k 60fps mov files (non dv/non hdr) recorded by an iPhone 13 Pro, almost all of the time the first video ocurring in the slideshow would play, and then the second one would start playing and then freeze, while the audio would continue. I did not test with other video files.
Please look into this. Please contact me if I can help debug the issue.

Edit: I have the 2019 version of the Shield and output to a 1080p 60 hz TV through a Marantz NR1607 AVR

I can also confirm the downgrade fixes the issue, but this does not seem to be a good long term approach.

In testing InFuse with AppleTV using the Plex server there are no issues. I will likely switch completely if there are no updates.

I commented on a different post yesterday as I was searching for “buffering” rather than stuttering but this sounds exactly like my issue.

I too for the last couple of months have been seeing frequent stuttering with direct play audio and video of 4K HVEC with Dolby Atmos EAC3 audio files on a 2019 shield tv pro. The server dashboard shows as “buffering” when this occurs. My setup is Shield TV → Denon AVR → Samsung TV.

Kodi can direct play the same files without issue as does other devices such as an Xbox Series X. There are network logs posted in that thread, mine look the same.

This continues to happen on my Shield TV Pro, on any version after (and including) v9.29. Every time. The only thing that fixes it is to turn off auto-updates in Play and sideload a version of the Plex player before that (e.g., v9.28.0.3162.) Everything works fine after that.

I notice it most when direct playing 4K HEVC content with Dolby Atmos, and the stuttering causes audio desync if you just let it play long enough. Makes movies pretty unwatchable.

Found this thread as I’ve noticed this exact issue on my Shield Pro w/ Plex version #: 9.13.1.37459 (39e89c99)

Hard wired setup LAN (no Wi-Fi) to a Synology NAS direct playing my 4K and Blu-Ray rips. The audio drop occurs on Atmos and Multi-Channel 5.1/7.1 audio files (DTS converted).

To this point, it seems that Stereo content is not impacted by the audio drops

Running the latest version on shield Pro I was watching Ready Player One and every 19 minutes there was jitter/stutter that lasted about 30-60s and then self resolved. Happened regularly every 19 min or so.

Played Rogue One and it would skip a little at like 5 min and the longer issue around 15-16min Intervals. 5 min mark, 1-2 frame issue and then at 16 longer issue. 21min another short skip then 37 longer. Once it fully dropped video.

Played same file on appleTV and no issue at all.

Shield Pro. Hardwired. Audio pass through on. Heavy stuttering in Plex. Emby and JellyFin work just though

I’ve been experiencing this same issue. My current setup:

Plex Server v.1.32.8.7639 - Windows 11 Pro (Just completely rebuilt OS from scratch and only have Windows 11 Pro 64-bit installed, drivers, and Plex Server)

Apple TV 4K (3rd Generation), Plex App version 8.30 (7668).

Hardwired at 1Gbps on both systems and on the same LAN

Direct Playback of 4k HEVC HDR (JFK 4k release), runs fine for about 30 minutes, then starts to stutter, choppy in the video, and then audio sync issues (happens within seconds of the choppy video).

Windows shows the network utilization drop from ~136Mbps to ~54Mbps, no transcoding ever occurs, utilization of CPU is only 3-5%.

I’m not 100% sure when this issue started, but happened on my Nvidia Shield TV as well (2017 model) and when server was on Windows 10. Seems this issue has been going on for months with the Plex support team not really taking it seriously, as I haven’t found any post with requests for logs or other data on what users are actually encountering.

Has anyone found a fix or some other post for things people have tried to work around this issue? Unlike Android, Apple is locked down and I cannot roll-back to an older release and am thinking of trying out the Infuse 7 option.

Getting this exact issue…

Running the latest server and client versions on mac mini → Nvidia Shield direct playing everything, via lan (ethernet)

My stutters come on randomly, impossible to reproduce other than wait for it to happen… movie can play for an hour fine then it will happen. sometimes the sound will cut out completely and the video is left playing without sound, but mostly its video stutters while the audio plays fine.

It happens only on high bitrate files with dolby vision and true hd, never had it on something like a 1080p lower bitrate file

Same. Never happens on 1080p or lower quality files and seemingly (not checked all times) only on dolby vision and true hd playback. Still need to signup for the trial of Infuse 7 to see if this is a client player issue. Also, saw an option in the Plex App for Apple TV to use the “old” video and audio player, but haven’t given that a shot.

Your issue may be a different issue than this one. This particular issue occurs on all resolutions, including 480p. The current workaround is to revert back to v9.28 since it started happening with v9.29.
