Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna

Thanks for adding the logs for the failure from the 24th December.
in this case - the error text Please check your tuner or antenna was not representative of what caused the error. It is not always easy to get the right text for error messages for each case.

The logs network failure on the Shield that and loss of connectivity to the local network and the internet as well. This happened at 09:05 am on the 24th December. This of course led to the failure of the transcoder communication with the tuner

I have no idea as to why the network connection failed on the nVidia Shield but it would not be a Plex issue

Had a chat with the development team and the error text could cover this as checking tuner would also include checking the network connection to it

Hi @sa2000

I did not understand a word - unfortunately. I am using the DVR… i am not into the tech details.

My situation is: I have one tuner that I share with three different PMS.

What do you mean

DVR is part of each PMS… did you mean tuner? Why should a tuner (that can handle multiple requests from different IP addresses) be dedicated to a single PMS? This is my central router…

The “three PMS are using the same tuner” scenario has a different reason. The tuner is following a one stream per IP address policy. So you cannot watch or record more than ONE stream at a time. That would render DVR to be useless.
Therefore, I have three PMS with different IP addresses and can record three streams at each moment.

Not at the same time… the SAT2IP hardware has four tuners that can be used.
I cannot see a problem until I don’t try to record more than four streams at a time.

Any chance there’s any update to the issues we’ve been having? Thanks!

Thanks for looking at this. Unfortunately the error message is misleading for me because I know the tuner and antenna are OK. I had many other failed recordings over a 1 week test period with the same error message so I just discarded them. I suspect that this connection loss is not the only problem I had with PMS.

I am sorry but this is just not a supported configuration for Plex Media Server.

A Plex Media Server needs to have exclusive access to the DVR and the background processing and scheduling assumes that

A note about it can be found on this support article
https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877427-supported-dvr-tuners-and-antennas/

So just to make sure you are saying having the software that comes with the Tuner installed on computer could be causing the recordings to fail?

After I uninstalled the HDHomerun software on my PCs I did some recordings to test.

Is there any more information other than that link.

Even when recordings were working I had trouble watching Live TV on Plex and would watch on the HDHomerun app.

Thank you

Nick

But it does not explain the erraneous behavior of the DVR software. I also have this while there is only a single recording running…

Thank you for explain this to me.
Can you please tell me why the Plex DVR needs exclusive access to a tuner with multiple “channels” when it can only use one of these due to the one-stream-per-IP rule of the tuner device?

The tuner should be handling concurrent requests and while I agree that it might affect tuning if there are too many requests to the tuner, Plex should be only one “user” of a tuner. Why does Plex need exclusive access?

It should be sufficient for me to say the Plex Media Server design assumes exclusive access to the pool of tuners it manages.

You mentioned earlier that you ended up with signal issues.
With regards to other software, it is best to only install it when wanting to do a specific test - eg you have a case where Plex failed to tune a channel and Plex no longer using the tuner (Plex Media Server shutdown) - then to try to tune the channel with the other software

If you have problems best to get some logs plus an indication as to when the error arose

There is a known issue - fixed in the next version - where if an error occurs then subsequent tune attempts would fail because the tuner is released

Hm… would be nice to understand the reasons.
So you want me to buy four tuners? One per stream that I want to record simultaneously (three) and one for LiveTV? Though my tuner already allows multiple streams (from different IP addresses)?

I see the phrase “FEATURE REQUEST” lurking in the shadows…

This issue is happening to me also I have gotten everything from incomplete recordings due to an error saying check your antenna (Signal strength is over 90% so shouldn’t be an issue) to shows only recording for literally 2 seconds and then just stopping. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-04_23-27-25.zip (3.1 MB) I am on the latest plex server version for Linux.

I am also having trouble recording, Signal strength is also 90% for all channels, is there still a problem with tuners as it shows i have 4 tuners but after setting 4 records they all fail, but then setting 2 records up it manages to fail… and yet some days it works perfectly if there is 2 records set…
I have even deleted the dvr and set it up again but still get the same probs :frowning:
very frustrating,
oh the entire house does not watch any live t.v on the computer running the media server just in case someone asks…
if i have posted this in wrong section i do apologise 1st time using this forum.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-05_05-22-32.zip (4.6 MB)

Just tried to record two shows at once again and one show recorded fine the other started to record then just failed with an error only recording the first 2 seconds. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-05_00-35-25.zip (3.1 MB)

Edit:
I did notice that the second tuner never seemed to hook meaning the first tuner on my hdhomerun box was showing the correct channel it was tuned to and recording and the one that failed never showed up as in use on the hdhomerun status page. This seem like an issue with the tuner not being properly initialized.

Edit 2: Rolled back to 1.13.9.5456-ecd600442 and everything works fine and the tuners are now correctly connecting to each channel this seems to be the reason why plex has issues recording on the latest version. Something is wrong with the code for specifying which tuner to hook into.

I might have to try rolling back to when I get home from work…

So, for Christmas, I got a SiliconDust HDHR5-4US. I removed the WinTV-quadHD PCIe that was installed in the server and now only have the Silicon Dust unit.

Now the program I couldn’t record is recording properly. The only other thing I might have done is upgrade to the newest version of Plex (I had downgraded to see if that helped; it did not).

I will continue to monitor and see if I have any issues with the new tuner but, so far, it’s working properly.

I still had issues. Recording failures for “Blue Bloods” and “Dateline NBC”. See Logs. The shows were on at 9 PM CST. Not sure when failures occurred.

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-01-05_10-39-36.zip (64.8 KB)

Thank you for the logs. The logs show one recording at a time - as if the Plex Media Server has only one tuner and not 2 tuners available for the HDHR5-2US device

I have referred it to the development team. It looks like a bug - some similarities with the evidence from @griffths - Plex DVR, Trying to watch Live TV but get error "Unable to tune channel (no parts)" - #373 by sa2000 but not exactly the same.

But please do check that there wasn’t any other software using one of the tuners

The reason there is only few seconds is because the tuner gets picked up when the other recording is stopped - so goes waiting until the tuner is freed

You can confirm this by seeing if you are ok when only one recording at a time scheduled for the time period

The only device I have hooked to the HDhomerun is plex I was able to replicate the issue again with some more information in this post Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna I can confirm its fine with only one recording and the bug is gone in 1.13.9.5456
