I am having an issue with recorded TV being unwatchable. If I watch a recorded TV show (show A), while it is recording another tv show (show B), then Show B comes out unwatchable. No errors or anything, but the video is stuttered and freezes. It can record two shows at the same time without issue. It is only unable to record and play at the same time. I did not have this issue in the very early stages of Plex DVR, and never had this issue with Windows Media Center on the same machine. Tried different server settings, with no success. Any ideas?
Plex Server Version:?
System Specs: CPU/MEM/ type of storage?
What OS and version?
What software are you using to play back the recorded show?
What Tuner?
Is Windows Media Center still running and accessing the tuner?
Plex Server Version: 1.14.1.5488
System Specs: CPU/MEM/ type of storage:
What OS and version: Windows 7
What software are you using to play back the recorded show: Plex on Web App, Plex on Fire TV, VLC
What Tuner: HD HomeRun Connect
Is Windows Media Center still running and accessing the tuner: No, I stopped using WMC and removed it from the PC
While 1.14.1.5448 is certainly a temperamental release on some equipment, I think you can narrow down where the issue is occuring, CPU, Network or storage by watching the system resources in task manager while you play back a recording.
Live TV/DVR is MPEG2, browsers and many devices are H.264 so Plex has to transcode on the fly which can be CPU intensive and could interfere with an ongoing recording or possibly the network if wireless or bad driver.
following an experiment, I have narrowed down this issue. It only happens when I am playing a recorded TV show through fire TV. If I am playing recorded content through chromecast, the content that is recording does not experience the same issue.
So even though the Fire TV can play the content natively, and all the settings are to allow for direct play of content, the computer must be transcoding anyway. That must be the cause of this issue.
