Recording tvshows not working as I think it should

When I setup Face the Nation to record all I get is the second half that is on channel 8.2. I don’t get the first half that is on 8.1, or maybe its getting overwritten, not sure. You can see how its listed on the screen shot. It is odd its on two different channels each Sunday. Its an hour long show, spit into 30 minutes segments that run back to back, but the second one is on a subchannel. It’s very odd, but they have been doing this for months. Maybe forever, I never used to watch it but our current situation here has me watching to see what is going on with our hopefully exiting Manchurian Candidate. BTW, the guide is correct, it does switch to the subchannel for the second half.

Plex doesn’t support a show getting split like that. Plex can only handle 1 show per day so the second one is likely overwriting the first or juts being ignored since the first already exists. It’s not going to be possible to get Plex to record and organize these correctly.

You can try saving each channel to their own library then you’ll need to manually combine them.

Is there a manual record option to get around it. Can’t see a way to put to a different library as they are the same name. Unless there is a manual record option somewhere. Thankfully my sagetv can do it. But I am trying to move to plex and don’t want to keep maintaining two systems.

Wouldn’t that require recording each show individually? As I understand it, you can only have one series recording. If you only have one series recording, you can only specify one library to record it to.

Plex, you really need to figure out how to let us have more than one recurring recording for a series.

In a similar vein, I like to record a show on two channels at the same time. For example, living on the Cdn/US border, the Canadian channel has better quality/bitrate than the US channel. So I prefer to watch on the Canadian channel. But sometimes reception is flaky on the Cdn channel. So I like to record on both – but plex only wants to record an given episode once. NextPVR allows me set up two rules: one rule to record all new episodes on channel 1 and a 2nd rule to record all new episodes on channel 2. The inflexibility of the plex scheduler is why I don’t use it even though I paid for it. The NextPVR scheduler lets me do anything I want. And it also supports manual recording (by time/channel) and keyword based recording. And you can cancel specific upcoming episodes of a recurring show without having to cancel the series.

Oh yeah. I forgot you can’t have 2 subscriptions for the same show. This won’t be possible.

You do get that it should be possible, though, right? It’s a DVR and he’s just trying to record shows.

I get it but it’s an unusual situation to have a show get split between 2 different channels.

We need a way to work around “unusual” situations. A simple thing like this should not be utterly impossible. I mean there is absolutely no way in plex that he could get those two programs recorded. The issue is not that it was split. The issue is that the SXXEYY information was the same. So plex will only record one of them, even if we try to individually record them (i.e. not as a series). Things like this should not be impossible.

If you can’t give us a more intelligent scheduler, then, at a minimum you need to give us manual channel/duration scheduling so that we can work around the stupidities. EPG errors cause this kind of problem all the time, especially with sports and specials. And we usually can’t get EPG errors corrected before the program has aired.

If Plex can’t get that people should be able to record what they want, then you should discontinue the DVR product. When you have hundreds or thousands of constant incidents like this, you just can’t call them “unusual” anymore.

And, yes, I know that I’m a pain. It’s been very frustrating trying to get Plex to understand the incredible deficiencies in this product. It’s like no one on the DVR product has ever looked at a competing product, even once. Someone there really needs to look at free products like NextPVR to see just how much Plex is under-performing on basic DVR features. I mean, you have two weeks of EPG data and your TV listings grid will only show the first week – just completely idiotic. It’s taken two years for Plex to finally admit that prime time starts at 8:00, not 5:00.

It may have been unusual 10 months ago. But “unusual” has long since passed. -Bill

Huh? Are there other shows that does this?

Probably, but I am not trying to record them. Face the Nation is a well known Sunday Political News program that’s been airing weekly for over 65 Years. Having a DVR that has NO WAY to record it would hopefully be shaking someone awake over there at Plex. I would have thought that having probably “the worst” guide experience for over a year might get someone in the organization to look at many of the obvious missing pieces in your DVR. -Bill

Try:

  1. Cancel the recording for Face the Nation.

  2. Set up a recording for the program immediately following the airing of the first part of Face the Nation; configure it to begin recording 30 minutes before the start.

  3. Set up a recording for the program immediately following the airing of the second part of Face the Nation; configure it to begin recording 30 minutes before the start.

  4. Watch the first 30 minutes of each of the resulting recordings.

  5. (Optional) Contact your local CBS affiliate and express to them how asinine it is of them to air what should be a single 60 minute program as two 30 minute programs on two separate stations.

I’ll give that a whirl. Thanks! It’s pretty lucky that I left my sagetv recording it as Plex has missed the first half for more than 6 weeks now, ever since I set it up.

This has been an issue in the UK for years with Plex DVR, episodes split do not record properly

The DVR is just not capable of anything but the most basic usage

Thankfully my sagetv can do it. But I am trying to move to plex and don’t want to keep maintaining two systems.

Save yourself the time and aggravation, and just stick with SageTV if it works for you. Plex’s live TV/DVR features have been a buggy mess for years and support here has shown that it’s clearly not a priority.

I would be, but SageTV clients are becoming ancient and are not being developed. The handwriting is on the wall. Even the guy who developed the Android TV client has given up now that Google is requiring a 32bit version be available to allow it to be in the store anymore. There is someone trying to fork it, but its not ready for primetime yet.

Ahh, gotcha. Have you checked out Channels DVR? They’re a bit pricey but probably the best option available these days. Emby is also great and about the same as a Plex pass. I’m not sure if either will help with your recording situation, but both are pretty rock solid options that should be worth checking out at least.
