Hi everyone,
So earlier this year I posted about an issue I was having where it seemed like my server (and computer) were suddenly unable to access certain Plex services like updates, agents, and even the forums. Additionally, I was unable to access my server from other devices, including on my own network.
I concluded that it was a DNS issue, and upon changing my DNS settings to Cloudfare, I restarted my computer and everything seemed to be working fine.
Then, a few days later, the problem began again.
I changed my DNS settings again both to and from the default to no avail, and eventually the only solution that worked was a complete reset of my PC’s network settings.
This worked for a few days, but then the problem began AGAIN. I reset my network settings again, and lo and behold, it started working again. Then a few days later, once again stopped working.
I’ve been continuing this cycle for a few months now and it’s been driving me absolutely crazy. I have no idea at this point what the solution could possibly be, and would appreciate any help on the subject. Is something messed up with my network? Why would the problem be recurring even after multiple complete nukes of my PC’s network settings? Why can I access the forums and update pages online on every other device on my network except my PC?
Does your ISP have an “advanced security” feature on their connection or their router?
The behavior as described sounds a bit like a firewall trying to block intense activity. And Plex can be intense at times.
So, if you can, disable that.
I also want to emphasize that this isn’t just an issue with the server itself; I quite literally can’t log in to the forums on my PC, or access the media server downloads online (as noted in the post from earlier this year). I’ve never had this issue on any other site, just sites associated with Plex.
Additionally, I had never had this problem with Plex at all on this same network until I accidentally messed up some DNS settings on my computer a while ago. That’s about when these issues started. Since then, I’ve tried everything DNS related I can think of, from switching to Cloudfare to flushing to a full on network reset. Nothing worked.
Does your router/firewall support or enforce any geo-blocking (region blocking) security? It’s becoming a more common feature and sometimes it can work against you with many services being cloud-hosted in different regions.
Or do you possibly live in a region which is heavily firewalled on a national level or which might otherwise be interfering with the proper routing of Internet traffic?
The issues you describe do still sound suspiciously like DNS resolution problems or traffic blocking/manipulation.
tracert command lists 30 results, the vast majority of which appear to have timed out.
nslookup returned a few IP addresses, but I’m not knowledgeable enough about this stuff to know what I’m looking at here or whether or not showing the full results could compromise my security, sorry. Is there any specific result that would tell you anything?
I’m fairly sure changing the settings on my router won’t affect anything (since again, this problem is contained to a single device on my network), but if you’re certain that might make a difference, I could give it a shot. I just want to avoid making any more unnecessary changes to my DNS settings since it seems to be what screwed me over this time lol
One last bump. I’ll try pretty much anything at this point. If not, I’ll probably do the nuclear option and reset absolutely everything (but I hope I don’t have to).
