Reducing throttling while processing a library rebuild?

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2935

I’m rebuilding my Plex library but it seems to be processing, matching and downloading metadata very slowly. It’s only making use of 5% or less of the CPU so it’s clearly throttled down. I noticed it does 3 files at a time.

Is there any way to decrease the throttling of processing files? Perhaps some hidden advanced setting? I’m on Windows.

Do you have the transcoder disabled?
Some work is being done in this area, but… in the meantime…
You’d be surprised what the transcoder does…

If you’re generating Preview Thumbs and Chapter Thumbs those will use a great deal of CPU - basically all of it, if the transcoder is enabled. Skip Intro Analysis - may not use as much CPU, but rest assured some fairly serious computing is underway during maintenance if Skip Intro is engaged.

Also dis-engage VPNs - unless a Split Tunnel, sending Plex around the VPN is employed. If that sounds odd - just turn off the VPN while all ‘this’ is going on.

Thanks for the reply. I’m on a gigabit connection with no VPN so that part is covered.

I’ve turned off video preview thumbnails, intro video markers, chapter thumbnails, audio tracks for loudness.

I’d be happy if it used up my CPU but it seems to be mostly idle, just very slowly ticking away at processing shows.

Yea what your seeing is normal…
For some reason they don’t use the full potential of the CPU…
I think it’s so if a user is using it it wont interfere, rather then throttling it when needed.

The new Beta that’s being tested is much better, not sure what the time frame for release is. It uses most of the CPU and creates more processing threads. What used to take 14 hours to do now does it in under 6…

Server/Settings/Transcoder:
The wording is odd - make sure the Transcoder isn’t disabled.

Other than that… I’ll watch with interest - I got nuthin’…lol

The processing of large amounts of data, can be easy, or appear easy, while stuff works in memory - or whatever black magic happens inside this box I don’t need to know about.

Re-creating a Library takes time.
How much?
As long as it takes is probably the right answer…

Isn’t that option needed when I try to watch the library? I’ve disabled all the processing when adding to the library but no luck. Hopefully someone has an answer or a way to get it to increase from working on 3 files to more at a time.

Yea, many people think The Transcoder doesn’t do much, but in reality if it’s disabled, it’s Plex that can’t do much without it.

Just make sure it’s on/activated/enabled - until you hear from further up the chain.

Oh - and do have the latest updates to everything - the aforementioned ‘work’ may have been done and may not have reached you.

Thanks, I definitely left that on and yeah on the latest build.

Here’s the beta with new scanners and agents:

I’ll try this out on another machine to see how well it works. It seems too early to use it on the main server at this point and won’t solve the issue for slow processing of TV, only movies for now.

I see there’s an option to do scanning as a low priority, too bad there isn’t one to increase the priority further.

don’t use the test scanner except for testing, there is no garuntee that it will be usable/migratable once finalized.

you’ll just have to scan in a regular library like normal and be patient like everyone else who went through the same thing.

There are a few things it’s not yet set to do. one is collections…

I suppose I must just be patient if there’s no way to increase the utilization. One related question. When you get the “Finished processing SHOWNAME S01 E01” I get that displayed anywhere from 2-10x per file in the alerts tab. I don’t recall that happening before but it seems to be running normally so I’m unclear if this is expected behaviour. Is it?

Seems to be, I believe that different metadata is dL from various servers/services, and while not shown which is which, there is a completion notice for each.

Ie, posters, ratings, summaries, subtitles, etc
