Releasing the new app was a crazy decision

Still no fix today.. I’m leaning towards JELLYFIN

Just wanted to join to the disappointment. I updated when the new horrible version went live, and as a senior frontend engineer I’m amazed at how many things this team has been able to do wrong.

It feels like a new UX designer just joined the team and wanted to leave an impression, but the result is like some amateur development team made a “modern” take on Plex, without being aware of all the features that should remain available. It’s like Sega trying to bring back their classics and falling epically because the people leading the projects barely know anything about their legacy. I don’t wish anyone anything bad, but whoever led this overhaul should be at least be demoted and supervised by someone with a better taste.

Fortunately I’m on Android and I was able to uninstall, block updates and install the old version.

I subscribed to the updates topic to be aware of when they fix all this mess, but it’s going to take them a long time. I just hope the old version is not blocked somehow in the meantime.

I think I’m done… really done !!! :expressionless_face:

PS: of course I said no!

Would anyone say “I Agree”? This is so against the profile and expectations people would accept from Plex.

Probably not, but at least they’re being entirely obvious about what they’re doing and users can make an informed choice.

abysmal upgrade, abysmal performance since, the horrible Fisher Price UI is one thing, but outright removing functionality like delete and watch together? Never thought I’d regret buying a lifetime pass. Are you guys speedrunning destroying this app or what???

Right now, on my ipad, plex is unusable :

  • the app drains battery like crazy, can’t even watch a full movie on a full battery
  • browsers either don’t allow real fullscreen mode, or in safari’s case leave ugly white bars at the top or bottom
  • creating a web app from the plex website still leaves the iOS menu bar at the top and a white bar at the bottom

This is of course in addition to the very questionable design decisions, such as having to scroll horizontally to browse librarires.

This update is both a huge downgrade and a huge let down, which makes me regret my lifetime plex pass, especially as there is still no officially response to the outcry.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but I can’t even get past the new experience welcome screen on my Android tablet. The UI is completely unresponsive.

I also hate the horizontally scrolling libraries. I have almost 30. Horizontal is not the way I want that represented.

@Diaruemnus I posted this as a feature request to change the UI but it hasn’t gotten much traction yet.

You’ve received my vote.

It wouldn’t solve all the issues I have with the new app, but it’s a large start.

Chiming in that the app is awful. The new downloads experience stinks. I don’t want to individually select episodes. The old way of being able to have the app keep the next 5 or 10 unwatched was a great feature. I also consistently get “download decision error” now and can’t seem to figure out how to work through it.

Just another nail in the Plex coffin for me. The only reason I haven’t completely jumped shipped is due to how much easier it is to get the EPG on my IPTV stream working vs having to setup my own EPG for Jellyfin. Since the Plex team keeps not listening to their users and taking away all the good things I’m guessing this will be gone soon as well.

You’ve received my vote now. I posted about this too. This design decision is bizarre.

Absolutely agreed, especially the now separate Plex Photos app for which for me is unusable as I can’t download my own images. Separating Plex Photos from the main app is a mistake, it just doesn’t work properly and is missing vital functions. What Plex needs to do is put everything back to as it was in one app.

@kayc1773 which they are doing now thankfully! There was an announcement a few days ago but basically they’re putting it back in the TV apps first then the mobile apps.

That’s great news, it’s so good to see that they’re undoing this mistake.

So wait - are they planning on merging back Photos and Music back into the main app? Or just Photo’s? Can you post the link to the announcement? I’m having trouble finding it.

Thank you @tom80H. I found it just as you posted. So basically it was all just a bad dream. I guess it’ll just take a little time to get things back to normal (e.g. usable…)

I really wish they weren’t reintegrating them. It makes so much sense to me that they’re in their own dedicated apps, and this will likely lead to slower app releases and slower delivery of much more needed features such as the ability to manage video downloads to the mobile apps Sigh

I know not everyone will agree with me, but hey ho.

I agree. Though, I consider it makes sense for the platforms which don’t have Plexamp (or the Photos app).
