Releasing the new app was a crazy decision

All I can say is I am never giving Plex the benefit of the doubt again. I’m really disappointed in the “Plex Experience” preview as we can now see that they didn’t care at all about any feedback other than bugs. Many things were recommended in the preview but it appears they completely ignored everything and rushed it out the door to meet some kind of BS release date.

A couple of things I’ve noticed:

1/ keyboard shortcuts for to pause/resume [spacebar], skip forward [right arrow], and skip backwards [left arrow] are missing. I use an iPad Pro 12.9 M1 with a Smart Folio keyboard for most of my Plex viewing, and this completely breaks the ability to move around the timeline in the playback experience.

2/ the video does not reliably resume if you switch out of a playing video and then back to Plex. It often freezes with audio playing for a few seconds, then I get a spinner. I have to exit out of the playback and manually Resume.

My primary use case for the Plex is using a player offline while traveling. I stream from Plex in hotel rooms across the globe, but watch a lot of shows on the airplane. The sync features between the offline content and online content was a nice capability. Now in the new app, the downloads are disorganized and might as well be a text list of shows. It is absolutely horrible.

For travel, this is 100% useless. For watching from home, way too MANY issues. So also 100% useless.

We need a way to roll back to a previous version with out jumping through hoops. I am installing Jellyfin and Emby to test. If no credible solution is presented within the next week, there will be one less Plex user.

Heck, I’d even jump through hoops if I can get the old version back somehow. Alas, all the previous updates since I started using Plex were fine, but now I’m stuck with a broken piece of software without having a backup. That’s the major downsite of Apple’s way of doing things for iOS, they don’t let us download any older version, and we’re stuck what the Appstore contains right now…

I already pre-warned my Apple users to turn off auto updates if they feel they want to take the responsibility of manually updating their other apps. Android users can turn off auto updates on individual apps.

I also froze updates on my server, because I can see them breaking the handshaking between the older clients and newer servers eventually.

I am having freezing issues on iOS.

Really am very disappointed with this. New release you don’t strip the features. Look at what happened with SONOS. they destroyed their app and userbase. Fired top people and been trying to bring all the feature back. This was poorly executed

It’s just been pushed to android mobile as well. Glad I disabled automatic updates beforehand. I’m not updating the android mobile app until it has feature parity and most of the bugs are fix, you know what should have been done BEFORE it was pushed out to replace the legacy app.

How did you roll back to the previous version? This is absolute rubbish!

Howdy,

I use Plex in a similar fashion, downloading movies and shows to my iPad and IPhone to primarily be watched while on travel at the airport, on an airplane or in hotels. With this new iOS and iPadOS version I no longer have the download option. It’s not there at all. Though my previous downloads, before the update are still there. I noticed downloading still works with the previous version and still works from my laptop.

I tried clearing my cache, quitting the app, sign out and sign back in. To no avail.

Did the download feature break in this new mobile version or was this an expected feature?

Wishing you all the best,

Honestly at this point I think the only thing they’re going to listen to is a bombardment of bug reports - which is what I’m trying to do. I just wish there was a better official way to report them and track them. You’d think they would want us to help them in that regard since they released such a buggy piece of junk.

Also: seems to be missing the ability to sort by your rating (not critic or audience rating, but user’s rating)

You know… I wrote this post, but I don’t think it’s going to do anything. Nor will any of our other suggestions and criticism.

The reason I think so is because, sad precedents aside, the fact that they decided to release a broken app in this state says a lot about how they run things. And it’s not good.

P.S. for those of you asking about how I downgraded the app, I have a jailbroken phone so it was easy for me. Another solution is to sideload the app (pretty easy) but you need a decrypted .ipa file of the old version.

Ever since the new app was released, I haven’t been able to delete anything. It’s wild—they’ve completely removed that capability.

Crazy April Fools joke…

Can’t wait for tomorrow when it goes back to normal.

Plex pass lifetime user from the beginning, but this actual „release“ is simply the buggy beta Preview ipa and the worst Plex experience since 0.8.x.
There seems to be no reported bug is fixed in that April fools day edition. I thought of that this beta will stay in beta for a release in winter or Q1 2026….

LiveTV is not possible to hide, on every single app start the app forgot my libraries, while reordering it freezes and crashes to repeat the try to enable and reorder my libraries.
Not possible to alter screenaspect, no pip working, sound still plays after pausing the video, language is a hard mix of english, german and some french. All metadata are in wrong language as well. Some clicks will not be noticed like if the multitouch display failed. Subtitles looks bad now (bug or feature?). Load performance at all is simply unacceptable, IF poster and backgrounds are loading at all. Sometimes pages keep completly empty.
Click on actor open the first alphabetical library? Playlist are broken, like downloads and download management and even if ALL bugs would be fixed and all missing features are implemented, then there is still an app where you have to click trice as much in comparison to the old app and a lot of wasted space on any page

Seems to be time to first try alternatives like emby, jellyfin or go back to use infuse. Now it’s „only“ mobile devices. If this bullshit will be rolled out to AppleTV then I‘m done with the plex app…

So they rushed the release before the price increase? Is that what’s going on?

All the employees probably know that this is nowhere near ready, so I’m thinking there was a directive high up to release it even at this unfinished state. I feel bad for the developers.
