I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. And it’s such a short sighted decision. Surely they know that releasing something that isn’t ready is going to cause reputation damage. They just need to look at what happened to sonos.
The new app was always going to be controversial with the removal of music, some UI decisions some people don’t like etc. but they could have gotten over that if the app was actually ready.
Yeah I was going to post something similar…I mean I could eventually get along with the new UI - would I like it, no, not really, but if at least basic functionality worked properly at release then it wouldn’t be so bad. I honestly hope someone gets canned over this - and no, it shouldn’t be developers - it needs to be whoever was the final decision maker in releasing this, knowing it wasn’t ready.
How was this even considered ready for prime time?
Why would you release an update taking away long-time features of previous versions?
Why aren’t my subtitles styled like I’ve set them to, ages ago, and now white over an obnoxious translucent black background?
Why am I being forced-fed with non-relevant content on my Home Screen without the possibility to Opt-Off in the Settings?
Who in Hell decided that getting rid of the Sidebar in favor of a small dropdown in Libraries was an improvement?
When FilmicPro released their horrendous new version, which was paywalled on top of that, they responded to the legitimate uproar with the release of a Legacy version.
The previous one.
You might want to give a SERIOUS thought about that possibility.
I fail to see how loosing so many features is balanced by the fact that now I am being told that just because I’ve watched Daredevil Born Again, I might like to stream that totally unrelated Indian movie in Hindi.
What The Actual Eff, Plex?!
Greedy investors, that’s what’s going on, we must not confuse the two, the devs are not directly to blame, they just have to carry out what the greedy suit-wearers order!
To downgrade the app, follow the instructions HERE
When you get to step 4 and need the build version number, i used 871812101. This is the latest version before the new/terrible version.
In the instructions it says “In some cases, the Breakpoint popup can appear twice. Simply edit the current Build version number like above one more time, and you’re good to go.”
All i had to do was just click “execute” without changing anything when the 2nd breakpoint popup showed up.
Get the App manager (app installer software) from HERE
FYI there is now a limit of 16 favorites/pins in the new PE. There isn’t even any visual feedback in the “favorite selection screen” it just let’s you happily select more than 16. This inconsistent behavior should be ironed out before release.
More points to add to the long list of weird things in the latest update.
Weird as in not immediately understandable why some core features were Thanos’ed while some most never asked for were stuffed down our throats, all of those for no distinguishable benefit for the users.
Why can’t we delete files from the App anymore?!
How does that help in any way the user experience or the useability of the App?!
So now I’ve watched on my iPad some local file, on my own local network, and I need to remember to go where my server is running to get rid of it?
I can’t delete files, I can’t delete entire season or a whole TV Show.
Nope!
I have to keep it somewhere in the back of my head and next time I am on my computer, I do have to remember which Shows/Movies my wife and I decided they aren’t worth keeping.
Why would you get rid of THAT?!
At least have a toggle for it to be masked or not, if some people were too keen on deleting things without understanding what “ARE YOU REALLY SURE, THIS IS KINDA PERMANENT?!” means.
Plex has always been about LOCAL files.
If you want to branch out to online content and streaming, good for those who care about this.
But make this a toggle in the Settings: Local only/All sources of contents.
Now, I have my familiar TV Shows/Movies/Recently Added/Continue Watching DWARFED by SEVEN more menus proposing online content I don’t care about.
What’s On Now
Today’s Live TV for You
Recommanded for You
Because You Watched X (This one is so randomly unrelated to anything we’ve previously ever watched, it’s almost worth keeping it just to laugh at the expense of the algorithm)
Plex Picks
Popular Trailers
Trending on Apple TV
That’s way more sources that I care for, without any toggles to state my preferences about having them on my Home Screen nor not.
At this point, we’re far remove from the idea on having a custom Home Screen.
How does any of this make sense, come on, having to go through Plex Web to actually delete things?
Seriously…
Thank you. I understand that not everything can be fixed in minutes or days—I’ve been working in tech for decades.
However, this still doesn’t answer the core question: Why was this version released in its current state? And why wasn’t the option given to continue using the previous version until the new one was truly ready?
This rollout has disrupted my workflow to the point that I’ve started exploring competitor options. is that really the intended outcome?
To get their milestone payment. In one of the preview threads a moderator said that it was on a code freeze, missing features, etc, and no where near ready before going back and deleting his post and all the posts that flooded in asking not to force it on us.
Only reason for this new version is to LITERALLY hide the people who have used it as it was originally intended, as a media server, and cater to people who will make media/streaming purchases. This is not a good sign for the media server customers who helped Plex from the start. Shame on Plex!
existing downloaded media doesn’t show thumbnails or progress bar whilst playing. After re downloading the content, it forgets where you watched to. It doesn’t appear to then backward update the server either. it crashes a couple of times an episode, no zoom, no skip start credits… no good!!
