Recently installed a Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS (DS920+) and had problems with Plex constantly disconnecting from the NAS. Read every forum post and article on the web to remedy this well-documented problem, but to no avail. Well, last night I got lucky and found something that solved the issue, and I want to share it, although I know that this particular post won’t meet everyone’s need. What I found to be the culprit in my specific scenario was having had two additional Plex servers up and running on separate devices from my NAS, which essentially was causing confusion within the PMS interface. In addition to my Synology NAS, I had Plex media servers installed on an HP laptop and on a Mac, and whenever I would fire up Plex on my Roku (for example), all of my servers would show up in the sidebar, but they’d all be disconnected. Well, I’d try everything to get my NAS server going, and even though I might get it to engage briefly after restarting (either via Quick-Connect or an actual hard reset on the unit itself), it would eventually disconnect again. Well, last night, I uninstalled every PMS I had running but the NAS, and when I subsequently logged onto Plex via the app on two separate Roku devices, not only was I able to see the entry for my DS920+, but I was also able to connect with it without issue. And it’s been running rock-solid ever since. So, not sure what happened, but after hours and days of trying everything under the sun to get my Synology NAS to stay connected to the PMS, I found that losing all of my other Plex servers but the one on the NAS was the answer for me. Seems to be something about multiple Plex servers not being able to play nice with each other, especially when accessed via the app on non-server devices. Hope this helps someone. Blessings.
No idea what was happening on your network.
However, it is not a problem to have multiple Plex Media Server installations on the same account and/or network. Many people do so.
I have PMS running on a DS918+ and an Ubuntu PC. Both are accessible by various clients locally and remotely.
As needed, I’ll run PMS on a Windows PC and a DS414. It is not a problem to have all four servers running at the same time on the same network.
I’m glad PMS on your DS920+ is working. Just be aware that if you do want to run multiple PMS servers it is possible.
