Remote access and bandwidth

Hi,

I have a performance question about Remote access on Plex server.

I have set up remote access successfully on my Plex server (Qnap TVS-471).

The idea is to access my Plex server from my brother’s place to stream a movie (overall bitrate = 13.4 Mb/s. 1 external SRT and two audio tracks; choice between DTS and AC3).

I would be using the native plex player app on my brother’s Sony smart tv.

I am just wondering however, what internet speed is of importance for smooth playback? Is it my own bandwidth to which my server is connected? Or is it my brother’s? Or both?

And what impact will direct play vs. transcoding have on the playback over remote access? (if any). Or does it always transcode over remote access maybe?

Both the server and the player (brother’s tv) are connected to their respective internet router by LAN cable.

However my internet provider is pretty ■■■■■■ compared to my brother’s.

My avg. speeds according to speedtest:

download 18.70 MBPS (so i understand that is around 2.3 mb/s)
upload 3.8 MBPS

My brother’s download speed is easily 15 - 20 mb/s

Thank you very much for any input!

Your upload speed will be the limiting factor. I would set plex to limit remote access to 3mbps based on your 3.8 mbps speed test.

Your QNAP will have to transcode down to that bit rate if possible. Of course video quality will be degraded some because of the low bit rate.

Thanks
