Remote access briefly available and then unavailable

Due to the way my apartment is designed I have to use remote access to make use of my plex server. I have two internet connections as as my TV cable provider (Astro - Malaysia) provides an internet connection (ISP is ‘Time.Net’)

I think that initially remote access was working from the original installation of Plex on my win10 Desktop, however it is not working now but I can connect indirectly but this seems a little unstable.

The port forwarding, on my ISP (Maxis - Malaysia) supplied router requires the following parameters:

Local IP / Local Port From / Local Port To / Protocol(Both/TCP/UDP) / Remote IP / Remote Port From / Remote Port To
192.168.0.106 / 32400 / 32400 / Both / x.x.x.x / 32400 / 32400

There is also an interface parameter which is currently set to ‘Any’.

As shown above, I tried to set this up using informantion shown in Plex and the public port number 32400 and Plex shows:
Private 192.168.0.106 : 32400 < Public x.x.x.x : 32400 Internet X

I manually specified port 32400

There is a green arrow next to the Private IP/Port and a red X next to the Public - but the meaning of these symbols is not clear to me.

When I neable remote access the message briefly flashes green and available but then reverts to red and unavailable.

I am at a complete loss as to what is causing the issue, could it be my ISP?

Jon Evan-Cook

I removed your public IP from the post as that is not very secure.

I checked and port 32400 is not reachable on the IP you listed.

You need to get your port forwarding setup proper and when it is you should be able to browse to canyouseeme.org and have it show Success for the port you setup.

nokdim - Thank you for your security advice, a very good point about the IP address which had not immediately occurred to me.

I am fairly sure that when first installed Plex I had remote access available but I do not clearly recall. The plex client on my appleTv sometimes says direct connection unavailable and connects indirectly(?) but recently I changed ISP from ‘Telekom Malaysia Unifi’ to ‘Maxis Fibre’ and it has become more unstable. In Plex the ‘Remote Access’ always seems to be red and has the notice ‘Not available outside your network’ even when I am watching on my TV which is on a different ISP network (Time)

I am completely new to using and setting up port forwarding.
Although I understand the principle when but I find it very confusing when my IP address is dynamically assigned, and I am not sure how one selects port numbers.

In the instructions regarding the WAN port can I select any number, how do I fine a valid number if the default of 32400 is not available?

In my router the port forwarding page I have entered

Local IP - 192.168.0.106 (this is Fixed on my internal network)
Local Port From - 32400 (Is this correct?)
Local Port To - 32400 (Is this correct?)

Protocol - Both TCP & UDP

Remote IP - X.X.X.X this is dynamic and changes so I am not sure if I should specify this in the router
Remote Port From - ?
Remote Port To - ?

For the remote IP Address should I be using the one detected by Plex?

After several hours of messing about I then noticed that the Maxis Router shows a completely different external IP Address to the one detected by Plex unless I am reading the Status page incorrectly.

The Maxis router is an Aminia MA131 which I am not familiar with but if I am not mistaken the WAN Configuration on the Status page the internet service should be showing the same IP address as detected by PLEX but it does not! (PLEX and the PORT CHecking WEb site both agree on the IP address). None of the IP Addresses shown in the router WAN Configuration agree with the IP detected by PLex and Canyouseeme

The router is plugged into a Huawei Echolife HG8240H GPON TERMINAL (Fibre Modem) could this be changing the IP address I am at a complete loss?

Many thanks
Jon

For anyone else with this sort of stability problem i eventually managed to find the solution not only too the port forwarding parameters but also what the initial Cause was and why I appeared to have two different internet addresses.

  1. The port forwarding issue.
What was not clear either with the Plex instructions or my routers instructions was that I only needed to provide a suitable port number in Plex I used 32401 but mor importantly in the router I only needed to provide the port number for the WAN side, and the IP/Port number for the server on my local network.

  2. The real problem was that my ISP set up had a different IP address for my domestic connection compared with the dynamically assigned public IP address and fixing this required the ISP to change my connection from a ‘Home’ connection to a ‘Public’ connection. Once they had done this I had to change my login details at which point my router IP address and the address shown in PLEX were the same.

With the correct parameters specified in the router port forwarding table and PLEX a quick check with ‘can you seems.org’ showed my specified port was open and all my remote PLEX connections were working fine.

Thanks for the advice and hopefully my solution will help other users with similar connection problems.

Cheers, Jon

Glad you got it working…
Based your second post it did sound like a double NAT issue so glad you were able to work with your ISP to get this fixed up.

Happy Plexing!

Hi Jon,

I am having the same issue as yours currently since I change my home broadband from UniFi to Maxis Home Fibre. Can you guide me how you solved it previously? I read through your explaination but unable to solve it yet for the time being.

It is quite dissapointing for not able to access my Plex when I am outside of my home.

I was having the same problem. Did port forward to port 46222, open port check was successful. Brief green about 2 seconds then it went to red. Tried port forward to port 32400, open port check was successful. Brief green about 2 seconds then it went to red. Then I tried port forward to port 49999, open port check was successful. This time it stayed green. Did not go to red. It seems some ports can work better than others.

I have no idea why, but 49999 works for me too. Same issue as you (the recommended ports all went green for a second, then red). Tried so many different things thinking it must be me misunderstanding, but nope, it was simply the port.

Thank you for your suggestion, ended a few hours of frustraion with a big grin!

I’m having the same problem using Maxis Home Fibre.
Did you call them up and change your connection to a public connection?
And I assume port 49999 is the external port and 32400 is the internal port. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much!

I did this and it works, referring to the above comments. I dont know the reason but you can try this and share your feedback
