Hi,
I would appreciate any help regarding the following:
I want to enable port forwarding using custom port in the 52000 range.
When using the default 32400 port across my router with Plex, I am able to access the server across the web no problem (I assume this has to do with Plex’s own relays?). However, using the custom port does not work. I have a D-Link DIR825 router. Port Forwarding requires application name (Plex) and TCP port to open (standard 32400 - custom in 50000 range).
I set the Plex server custom port to 50000 range and tcp port in router (DIR825) settings to the same port. Am I meant to use different port numbers between the two
How can I go about using a custom port for access? What am I doing wrong?
In your router configuration, there must be separate input fields for the external (WAN) port number and the internal (LAN) port number.
Set the external to your intended 50xxx , but leave the internal on 32400.
(the user interfaces of some routers are very confusingly laid out, so that it’s not very clear which is which. I recommend you to carefully read the user manual of the router.
Some will accept a port range as input, in which case you’ll either have to set the start and end port number identically, or leave off the end number. Which it is, is dependent on the router model.)
After setting up the port forwarding in your router, open Plex Web or Plex for Desktop and go to
Settings - ‘Show Advanced’ - [server name] - Remote Access
and put the external port number into
Manually specify public port “50xxx”
Ensure that the network connection in your Windows settings has been set to “Private”. It must not be “Public”.
If you have several network connections, disable all but one. (or ensure that only one has a valid “gateway address” configured)
If you have defined a “Custom server access URL” in the plex server settings, include your custom external port number into the URL.
Unfortunately, documentation around my specific router configuration using the manual is pretty vague or the UI shown in pictures doesn’t match my UI (it’s much older).
I don’t see a setting for WAN/LAN inputs as a standalone setting. I only see anything to do with LAN & WAN connections in the IPv6 Firewall settings. It might be on the modem config side, but I don’t want to mess with that. I may end up just using the standard 32400 even if it means using the relays if that’s what’s actually happening.
I have my network set to private (only have 1 network connection on the Plex server). And no custom URLs exist.
Thank you OttoKerner for your advice, Yaracuy for your confirmation. I managed to get the port forwarding to work. The custom port forward worked over virtual server settings. Standard port forwarding for Plex (32400) worked on Port Forwarding in the router settings as well. So in the end both ways do work, just that virtual server appears to be the one used for custom ports.
