Remote Access Continuously Disables

I’ve used Plex for many years and everything just always worked great for me. Recently however things keep going haywire with remote access and I’m not sure what’s going on.

I have Plex Media Server running on my personal Windows desktop. I have no issues with it within my household/network as all devices stream just fine. However away from my house, I can never get a “direct connection” so it goes to the relay and streams quite poorly.

In doing some looking at things, I’ve found that my Remote Access keeps disconnecting. I click on the Retry and it will enable, then after a few minutes, it disconnects again and says not available outside my network. I can stream through the relay when it’s like this, but again at a lower quality.

I’ve checked my firewall and made sure Plex has access to the net as well as made sure the port is included for TCP. I’ve turned my firewall off completely and I get the same thing. I can always get it to enable for a few minutes and then it goes back down.

I’m not aware of any changes that I’ve made that should be causing the issues but I also can’t pinpoint exactly when the issues started as it always works fine on my network so it went unnoticed for some time.

I’m at a loss as to what might be going on and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’m working with CenturyLink modem/router combo and a Deco mesh system.

I have the exact same issue. It comes on for about 30 seconds and then it says it’s disabled.

PMS will show your remote access status as „green“ while it’s checking that status. For that reason, you should consider the remote access setup isn’t working at all.

Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?

There’s also a guide with some more details on how to troubleshoot remote access issues.

Hello Kevin,

I Have exactly the same issue, I run Plex Server on a recent Synology NAS, with the Syno Firewall activated with 2 rules created and autorized for:

  • 32400 (Port Source + TCP + IP Sources rertricted to France
  • 32400 (Port Destination + TCP + IP Sources rertricted to France

I m in France, with SFR Provider and its SFR Box (UPNP activated).

When I activate Plex Remote access, it works fine (Green) then after few seconds, It fails.

then few seconds after:

I read the troubleshoots from Plex website, no hint, no help.

when I Connect In Remote from away on a TV (Plex Client installed on it), the quality is very medium and a message appears asking me that I m not in a direct access to the Plex server and I need to configure it to have the best image Quality.

Any Idea Guyz ?

Plex will show an „optimistic“ green status indicator while testing the remote access. If the status seitches to red after a few seconds, consider that remote access isn’t working (hence you’ll be lucky if Plex will be able to establish an indirect connection via a Plex Relay server).

To what results did you get during the troubleshooting? I’m speaking of the outcome/findings of the individual steps, not that it didn’t work

I tried to change the port,
to activa the upnp feature on router
restart the NAS and the internet Box

The test access that your server is reachable might be coming from outside of France.
And that is what you are blocking in your firewall.

“IPs Being Blocked”

Hi Tom, finally I solved my problem myself.

The origin of my problem was due to my Internet Provider (SFR), who by default propose an Internet Box with IPV6 activated and forced by default, with no possibility of Routing.

A solution was completed by my Internet Provider to activate only IPV4 for my box.

It has been done, and I cofigured the Port forwarding option that was activated then.

And I re activated the Remote Access on Plex Server.

Now all services are OK.
