Remote Access Connection Problem

Hello I’m a newbie to Plex – about a week. I am having a problem with remote access. Here is some background information. I have two computers and an HDHomeRun device hard wired via Ethernet to my FIOS Gateway router. One computer is for multi-use and one is a HTPC. (Note: I also have a Raspberry PI, Smart TV, Blu-ray Player, Amazon Fire Stick and several other devices connect wirelessly). I looked on the Plex forum to set up Manual Port Forwarding on my HTPC for Plex. My issue is that for some reason my remote access becomes disabled at times and I don’t know why. When I try to enable it, I see a quick “remote enabled with a green check mark” and about less than a second later my remote access becomes disabled with a red “x”. I attempted several times to enable the remote access again and I keep getting the same thing—Remote Access disabled. The remote access will eventually re-enable itself later, on its own but I don’t know why. I think something on my network is causing the problem but I am at a lost on how to trouble shoot my network. I need help to find a solution and keep my remote access feature enabled unless I want to disable it.

Thank you.

Did you setup port forwarding on your router for this?

Thank you for responding. Yes, I did and I still get this intermittent problem

Port Forward and manually specifying the port should be reliable

things to check

  • local IP address of your server is fixed eg a DHCP Reservation in the router
  • is the public IP address changing periodically ?
  • Is there Double NAT ? check the wan/internet IP address on your router internet connection/status page. It must be the same as the IP address showing on http://canyouseeme.org

If you do disable / re-enable remote access or tick/untick manually specify port, there are some timing problems that may give rise to status being incorrect - a reboot after enabling it and manually specifying the port may help. The issue would be arise if there are numerous clicks and in quick succession - best to leave 30 second gap between clicks and if set correctly best not to unset/reset

Thanks for responding. I followed your instructions above and I am still not getting remote access. I still see a quick “remote enabled with a green check mark” and about less than a second later my remote access becomes disabled with a red “x”.

local IP address of your server is fixed eg a DHCP Reservation in the router? Yes **
is the public IP address changing periodically ? No, It’ static
Is there Double NAT ?
No**

I’m at a loss.

There is no magic wand. Each case needs to have the full configuration and settings checked out - assuming you have already been through the checklist on this support article https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200931138-Troubleshooting-Remote-Access

So all screenshots from router and server settings for remote access, firewall settings
What security software is installed
Also simple things - like network connection showing as Private or Public in windows ?

I’m using McAfee Anit-virus software. I started over today and for about 1 hour I was successful in connecting using remote server. When I was watching Plex LiveTV, my streaming froze. I checked my computer and saw the message in the screen shot below. When I clicked on retry, the connection goes green for less than a second with the message “Fully accessible outside your network” and then back to “Not available outside your network”. It’s wants to connect but something blocks the connection. I disabled my anti-virus program and firewall and I’m still blocked.

What does http://canyouseeme.org show now? does it show success?
sounds like a flaky port forwarding problem…

Who is the vendor of your router?

could be router issue. Network dropout. Logs at the time when the working remote connection dropped out may show what elese failed at the time.

we have had users before who said there was no Double NAT when there was.

There have also been issues with MTU Size where just being at or below 1500 was not adequate and the optimum value needed to be worked out using varying packet sizes for ping

And we have also had security software being disabled yet some elements were still active. It may be better to create rules in the security software, which would be

  • Program Rules: Allow the Plex Media Server exe files and treat as trusted
  • Port Rules: Inbound Port Rule: Protocol = tcp, Local Port = 32400, Remote Port = any, Rempte IP = any, Programs = any, Action = Allow

And did you check to see that the network connection remained as Private and did not switch to Public in windows?

Is the port forward setting still in place ? Could you provide screenshots

and restart Plex Media Server and retry and get server logs as well

I had a lot of the same issues. What worked for me was that my Rogers Modem/Router had a firewall built into it. I disabled it and I have been good for about 4 days now. If it stays working then I have found my culprit and I will then try to configure the firewall to allow the traffic. Log into your modem and take a look.
