My remote access will not remain on, I have stumbled through the troubleshooting steps as best i could and am still stuck, i am also stuck with a windows 7 ultimate computer(if that makes a difference).
Did you setup a port forward?

Check canyouseeme.org for success on your port forwarding.
I’m also having this exact problem, and it just started recently. Remote access can be enabled, and works but only for a few seconds before breaking again.

I recently fixed a similar issue with my server by doing the following:
- delete current port forwarding rule from router
- in the remote access settings clear the specified port and checkbox for “Manually specify public port” (if set)
- disable remote access
- enable remote access
In my case this automatically created a new port forwarding rule on my router, on a different port from the one I was previously using. Checking via canyouseeme went from timed out (original port that had been working fine for months) to success (new port related to automatically created rule).
