Remote Access Failure

Server Version#:1.18.5.2309
Player Version#: 4.56.4 (Web player)

My setup is Synology DS1019+ running DSM 6.2.4. This connects to a Synology RT2600ac Router which in turn connects to a Huawei Optical Network Router HG8244.

The Synology is on a LAN using 10.0.4.xx IP addressing scheme which is static IP’s from the 2600ac. The Huawei is on 192.168.x.x IP address scheme for WAN to LAN.

I am overseas and do not have ability to log into the Huawei device to open port 32400 (no one at home to connect a laptop and use TeamViewer).

So I was thinking is it possible to route the public port 80 on the 2600ac to internal port 32400 which would allow Plex traffic to the server because port 80 is open in the Huawei. I tried this but it didn’t work. I can remote log in to the NAS and 2600 no problem using synology DDNS, but having trouble to reconfigure Plex for remote access.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

You’re in a double-NAT situation.

If you leave the 2600ac in router mode, you will need a double port forward, one in the Huawei and one in the 2600. The Huawei port forwards to the 2600ac’s 192.168.x.x address. The 2600ac port forwards to the Synology. The Synology and the 2600ac must both have static IP addresses.

Possibly your ISP could access the Huawei remotely and configure the port forward for you.

An alternative is to put the 2600ac in access point mode (not sure this is possible remotely). You will still need a port forward statement in the Huawei.

A third alternative is to disable routing in the Huawei and have it act as a simple access device (like a cable modem). You can then put in the appropriate port forward in the 2600ac. Doing this remotely is risky. You would most likely be cut off from your equipment during the process. If the 2600ac did not pick up the reconfiguration of the Huawei, it would need to be rebooted, and nobody is there to do so.

This does not get you out of the double NAT situation. You would still need to forward port 80 from the Huawei to the 2600ac.

Using port 80 is a bad idea anyway, since it is used for web traffic. Using it would cause issues for all other devices on your network that use port 80.

Thank you kindly for the advice.

I am reluctant to change the operating modes of either router in case it goes pear shape and I get cut off completely.

I think maybe the best solution right now is to try and call the ISP and see if they can do it for me. The 2600ac and NAS are both on static IP’s so if I can get the Huawei to open 32400 and forward then should be good to go.

Failing that it means waiting 3 months before I get home and am able to access the network locally and fix it…

Thanks Trumpy81, I think Fordguy61 hit the nail on the head.

I cant risk changing the router settings to bridge mode as I am other side of the world to my network and if it goes wrong I’m buggered to say the least.

I do appreciate the quick advice though.
cheers

Fordguy61 also said that you’ll have to create a double port-forwarding. Even if your ISP can set up your Huawei, they won’t access the device behind it.
If you have ssh access to your NAS, trumpy81’s suggestion will allow you to log into your server as if is local in your machine. This way you can at least enable Relay and watch something remotely, or directly in your browser.

Thanks CostaHT, I think if I can get the Huawei router sorted out then the rest I should be able to manage as I have remote access to everything else.

Just had a thought about another solution.
All my media is on my NAS which is accessible outside the network. Could I put a Plex server on a local machine I have here and have it access the media remotely?
