Hey Tom: I followed the help you provided the above user, and I’m hoping you can help me. I’ve been using plex for years, without issue. I’ve been remotely accessing plex for years. I recently had to replace my TPLink AX6000 router with a Synology RT2600. Since then, remote access will not work. Here are the interesting bits I found using your post linked above:
I tested my external port using canyouseeme. The port checked out as accessible.
I typed in my external IP address and the port I check and was able to successfully log into my plex server. The IP Address and port in the URL is the external/public numbers listed in the Plex settings.
I can type in my internal/local IP and internal/local port and I can get to my Plex server successfully.
In the Plex settings, even though both the public IP/Port and the Local IP/Port work, clicking “retry” to establish “Remote Access” will not work.
Do you have any ideas or can you point me to another thread for more guidance?
Thanks for the reply, Tom. I’ll be happy to reimburse you for your time if you can help me figure this out. I’m including information and the tests I’ve conducted in trying to troubleshoot the issues. Please see the following:
Configuration:
Private/Local: 192.168.x.x:32400
Public: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: 42333
Port forwarding rule in router: 42333 to 32400
Private/local IP of Synology NAS/Plex is DHCP Reserved
Status: Private 192.168.x.x:32400 ← Public xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:42333 X Internet
Tests:
Local computer, in browser
192.168.x.x:32400 - Successfully access and watch content
Public xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:42333 - Successfully access and watch content
Android Phone
Via Plex App on Local WiFi: Can see the library, but get an error “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again” when trying to play the media.
Via Plex App on Cellular Data: I get a message saying a connection to the server is not available.
Via an Android Browser, logging into Plex.tv with credentials and launching in browser: I can successfully view the library and stream content on both WiFi and Cellular.
Roku
On local WiFi: Successfully able to view library and stream content
On guest WiFi: Unsuccessful - Media Server is unavailable.
Friends w/Plex Pass Trying to access my server: Unsuccessful
There’s certainly something fishy if it’ll play in some use cases but not in others.
Do you have any tools / firewalls that’ll block certain traffic on your router / inside your home network that could interfere with that communication?
That was my thought as well. Given that everything worked flawlessly with my current config when I was using my old router, and the only new variable is the new router, I turned off all Firewall features on the new router. I also set up a specific “allow” record on the router in the Firewall. This had no effect. I then turned off the firewall on my PC, which should have nothing to do with anything.
I did do all of this before coming to the Plex forum. I believe it has to be a Synology router issue, so I started there with a support ticket, which was a waste of time because not only did they offer no assistance, there only solution was to tell me it was a Plex issue.
Anyway, I’m running out of ideas, so I thought I’d reach out here. Short of hiring an infrastructure consultant to review my network, I’m not sure where to go next.
