Remote access: I give up

I give up on remote access. Last month I had family members remote accessing with no issues. I upgraded to plex pass and that’s when my troubles started. I enabled remote access and it was unstable, sometimes worked, others not. I also now had throttling down to 2 mbps when family was streaming. Reading all the helpful hints I contacted my isp and paid to have a static ip address set up. That took half a day but got it done. No it’s more unstable then before. I also tried tailscale and could never access my libraries when logging on with my phone, it would log into my server but the libraries were hidden so that didn’t work. I have been working for 2 days now trying to get this to work but I have thrown in the towel.

From what you describe, it sounds like you’re on a relayed connection. That usually means there’s something wrong with your remote access setup.

Have you been able to see/access your forwarded public port from outside your home network (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org)?

In case you’re not fully into throwing a towel… further troubleshooting should require the output/finding from the steps in this troubleshooting guide (not just the result → “it’s not working”).

I think I finally got it fixed. I went into my router and added port forwarding. I had been putting in the wrong IP address. I was using the public IP address, it should have been the private one. Since changing to the correct one, remote access is stable. I had one of my friends who has access to my library’s login and stream a movie, had no issues. I do not have relay enabled. I just checked with canyouseeme and it is successful.
