Remote Access Issues - Separate Router from Modem

Server Version#: Server - Mac
Player Version#: Moot Point (See below)

I have a Linksys AC 5400 Router, separate from the modem provided by Spectrum Cable.

My Plex Media Server is going through my iMac–all files are stored on a 4TB external drive. The server has successfully catalogued all movies and is accessible on my iMac (the server).

However, remote access is not available outside my home network.

I clicked the “manually specific public port” (using the default value)…and it worked for 5 seconds before disconnecting and going unavailable again.

I honestly have no clue where to even start troubleshooting this—and I’m pretty well-versed when it comes to networking/etc.

I went to the instructions link (on the Remote Access page of the server), but have no clue what path to choose first…and little time to run the gambit of trial and error.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to start?

Thank you!

With 2 modems, chances are you’re dealing with a double NAT situation. There’s a section on this page to help you with that.

Since you already manually configured TCP port 32400 in PMS please do the following:

  1. Assign a static IP address or configure MAC Address reservation for your iMac in the Linksys router
  2. Manually port forward TCP port 32400 to the IP address of your iMac
  3. Find the the IP address of the WAN interface of the Linksys router and make note of it
  4. Go to www.canyouseeme.org and confirm the IP address reported there is the same IP address as reported by your Linksys router in Step 3
  5. Probe TCP port 32400 sourcing from www.canyouseeme.org

Set up a port forwarding on your linksys

It’s simpler to set one of the modems to bridge mode, so there’s no double NAT.

You are correct but I am first assuming the OP does not have Double NAT and the instructions are to confirm that. If it comes back differently then we know its Double NAT. Same difference, different approach.
