I have been unable to access my PMS outside my LAN for some time now. I’ve done all the troubleshooting I’ve had time to do on my own and am completely stumped. I’ve tried everything in the double-NAT scenario troubleshooting, adjusting DNS settings, IP mapping, nothing I’ve done has worked. I’m really hoping someone can personally troubleshoot me through my system and find the kink.
Equipment info:
Server Computer: Late 2017 iMac - 4.2 i7, 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM, 8GB VRAM
Server Drive: 1TB Seagate External HD 7200 RPM
Modem: Motorola Surfboard 6141 (bridge)
Router: AirPort Extreme 6th gen
(computer is NOT currently hard-wired into router, although I did test it briefly with same results)
What I’ve tried to fix it:
-Everything in double-nat scenario troubleshooting
-Factory reset router, then created new user on computer, connected media drive, claimed server and re-set everything up.
-Setting up static IP for the Plex Server (although I possibly could have done something wrong here)
Any help will be appreciated. I’m definitely no networking expert and fairly new to all this.
Thank you,
Gavin
Dang… Still nothing. Is there a chance there is an issue from my ISP? If you look at the Remote Access page in those screenshots it appears that the port forwarding is working but something is wrong at the “internet” level. Just not sure what that could mean exactly
Maybe try and delete that port forward and add a new one?
Set it up for 32400 on public and private side.
Once you do that try http://canyouseeme.org and port 32400 and see.
It sounds like your port forwarding isn’t getting setup right or not working.
Do you have any other services you host you can setup a port forward for like a web server or something so you can test if your port forwarding is working?
Why is the Private IP Address in the screenshot for Port Forward wiped? There is no security issue with sharing the private local network IP Address
And is manually specified port ticked on the remote access plex media server settings page ? and if the Public port is 41222 then 41222 needs to be in that box and also in the canyouseeme.org test
You have a screen shot that shows private and public ports.
The public port can be almost anything you want to have, over 1000 and under 65K or there abouts. This is the ports seen from outside of your network. You specified 41222 in the screen shots so this is your outside port and the only port seen outside of your network. 32400 will never be seen outside with the rules you are setting up.
The private parts are internal to your network and for Plex to work right MUST be set to 32400. Again, this will never be seen outside of your network, unless you forwarded it. Any attempt to hit this port outside of your network will return an error.
Once you have this setup that way, you still need to go into the settings on the server and tell Plex what public port is used outside, so this can get published out to any clients you try to use remotely.
This needs to be done for everything to work right. Otherwise it won’t work at all, or work intermittently.
The NEXT step is to go to canyouseeme.org and try to verify the PUBLIC port is opened. Not the PRIVATE port (which has to be 32400, remember.)
The private port (32400) is never seen past your router (unless you have manually specified that port in the router’s rules. Don’t do this unless it goes to 32400 inside, too.)
I’ve sent you both the password to my screenshots. Check those out and get back to me if you don’t mind. Based on what you both have said and my limited knowledge, it SEEMS like I have everything set up correctly. Obviously I don’t, but I think it will be obvious to one of you in my screenshots. Thanks for your help. Looking forward to putting this problem behind me.
The Airport Extreme shows it having a different WAN IP address from the one that is your wan IP Address
Its IP Address is 100.64.xxx.xxx but your WAN IP Address visible to Plex Media Server is 205.197.xx.xx
The 100.64.xx.xx is within the Carrier Grade NAT range 100.64.0.0 - 100.127.255.255
The only real solution when having carrier grade NAT leading to double nat is to see if the ISP can sell you a fixed static WAN IP address
What version of Plex Media Server are you on? I upgraded today to the most recent release 1.8.4.4249 and it broke remote access for me. I could log in through the web remotely, but through any of the apps it would not connect, which was weird. I downgraded to version 1.8.1.4139 and am able to connect remotely now through the plex apps.

coincidence - nothing would have changed in this area
I just upgraded to Version 1.8.4.4249 and I cannot get remote access to work either. The light goes green for a second, then switches to back to red. This stinks!
@“dac72@yahoo.com” this is not a known issue and this users issue is not related to an upgrade at all.
Best suggestion is to create your own post showing what you have done as far as port forwarding or troubleshooting.
And your issue will be handled individually.
I talked to my ISP and they wanted to charge me an extra $10/mo for a fixed static WAN IP. I’m switching to Centurylink on Wednesday because theirs are free (plus they charge about half of what I’m paying now for the same speeds). I’ll let you all know if it works after that.
